Charles Potter

Classical Piano, Free Improvisation

About Me

Charles Potter began studying music at the age of 7, and began playing professionally as a church organist at the age of 13. It was during this time that he began improvising, first, with church hymns and then later with his own free improvisations. During his career, he has won several competitions and awards, has played widely and records on the TRC Records label. Potter’s playing is abstract, tonal, and freely improvised, colored with lush chords and pensive melodies, and punctuated by percussive rhythms. His programs typically consist of two halves of about 45 minutes each and occasionally feature improvisations on themes given to him by members of the audience. 200 years ago, to hear a musician improvise in public was a common experience. But now, it is exceedingly rare outside of jazz or blues performances. This music, although recorded in a studio, was improvised on the spot. No dubbing or correction of any kind was used. Each work was recorded in one take and in one pass.
