About Me

The National Hip Hop Political Convention (NHHPC) is a developing organization currently operating in over 20 states throughout the country.

Our keystone event is the bi-annual National Hip Hop Political Convention, where delegates from Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) around the country converge to network, attend activism workshops, witness and participate in community-centric Hip Hop events, and most importantly discuss and re-focus the groups political agenda for the Hip Hop Generation in order to funnel the political and cultural power of the hip hop generation into mainstream political activities.

Purpose
The purpose of the Convention is to give voice, expand democracy, educate and mobilize an underrepresented community to build progressive social change using the influence of Hip Hop. The Convention seeks to ensure a community free of misogyny and excessive violence, and seeks to increase its influence on the values, life practices and creative expression of young people, artists and entertainers.

The Convention also works to build unity amongst the grassroots and electoral organizing arena, and supports the movement towards increased civic and political participation within the Hip Hop Generation by:

1) Developing and promoting a community agenda for the Hip Hop Generation
2) Supporting a national organizational infrastructure for the Hip Hop Generation
3) Supporting potential Hip Hop Generation civic leaders and candidates through education and training.

Conventions

The first National Hip Hop Political Convention was held from June 16 to 19, 2004 in Newark, New Jersey. The second was held July 19–23, 2006 in Chicago.

You can read a great article on the first NHHPC convention here , and watch the trailer for the 2006 convention here .

Joining the NHHPC

If you decide to join the NHHPC, you will be taking on the challenge of bettering your local community with your peers through collective work, and, you will be invited to participate in the bi-annual NHHPC convention to meet with members from across the country to discuss, amend and vote on our national agenda, the document that unifies our local and national missions into one cohesive, publicly available document·

Is there a NHHPC loc (local organizing committee) in your area? Not sure? Message us with your name, location, phone number, and one sentence on why you want to join and we'll be glad to let you know if there is a loc near you.

If there isn't one nearby, you are welcome to start one. How? Send us a message requesting info on how to start a NHHPC loc and we'll respond within 24 hours with instructions.
