katharine kerr's novels of devery and the westlands (one more book left to go in the series, she's been working on them for over twenty years!), the dark angel trilogy by meredith ann pierce, american gods by neil gaiman, atlas shrugged by ayn rand, anything by dean koontz (especially odd thomas and watchers, just read life expectancy and loved that as well), all the harry potter books (except the fifth one, harry was way too whiny to be likeable)
