SYNOPSIS
You wake up from a dream and realize that it has come true. What happens after that? How does your new life compare with what your life might have been, had you continued dreaming? What or who is about to emerge from what were only the corners and shadows of your dream?
Thus Raghu, a young, newlywed Indian engineer, arrives in the United States with everything he thinks he needs to be happy: a work visa, a good job, unbounded hope, and the faith and support of his lifelong friend Raj, a successful Indian-American businessman with whom he is reunited after ten years.
Nevertheless, despite supersonic travel, the Internet and mass media that have made India and America virtual neighbors, Raghu immediately senses that he has landed on another planet. Everything that was familiar in his dream is now odd, exotic or mysterious. English in America is an alien language, competition is life-or-death, the food is inedible, and Raj, the man he thought he understood best, lives and works at warp speed.
Moreover, the women are out of control. While trying to do everything on the job to justify the confidence of his American employer, Raghu finds he must learn to co-exist with American women, including his self-assured boss Lori, the earthy convenience store clerk Maria, and the sympathetic fashion model Samantha, Raj's fiancee and housemate. When Raghu's new wife, Anjali, comes to the States to join him, he must interpret all these novelties to a new and skeptical set of eyes and values.
Memories, expectations and reality clash when anyone wakes up from a dream. Each dreamer must choose for himself the vision that remains, and then go with it. When the bottom line of the free marketplace suddenly forces him to depend on himself, Raghu discovers that he and Raj are no longer one soul in two bodies but separate men with different, life-changing choices to make.
"Perception" is a film about how people from two worlds meet the real world. There is no right or wrong way to see, taste and feel what we encounter, but our perceptions can make it easier or more difficult to know, embrace and profit from things as they are. "Perception" drives to a dramatic and hopeful conclusion as Raghu reconciles wishes with opportunities and plays the cards that life has dealt him.
