Symphony of Symbols

About Me

The band was formed in 1997 by guitarist Sándor Szalkai and drummer István Forró. Both of them prefer thrash, death and black metal and listen to bands such as Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Satyricon, Immortal, etc. Though among their favourites there are some classical pieces as well. After 1 year making riffs now they are making complex songs too. István met bass guitarist Tamás Mezey at secondary school in 1998. Tamás is inspired by Nile, Suffocation, Death and Metallica. These three guys made up the core of Symphony of Symbols. Their aim was to be a band that performs a lot on stage. Since performing semi-prepared songs would not really have been enjoyable they came up with Metallica themes (Fight Fire with Fire, Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow, Master of Puppets, For whom the Bell Tolls, Call of Ktulu, Frayed Ends of Sanity…etc.). The first singer in the band was Dénes Szalkai, Sándor’s cousin. He became a member at the end of 1998. A second guitarist was needed. Róbert Csala was the chosen one, an acquaintance of Tamás. In Flames and At the Gates are his favourites. The first concert was performed with these guys in spring 1999. Unfortunately Róbert had to leave, since his other projects seemed to be more important for him. (Relic, Fagyhamu) Pantera and Dream Theater fanatic Gábor Vári replaced him. His task was mainly writing the solos. In the meantime Tamás began playing in Fagyhamu as well and Sándor took up the classical guitar. István’s favourites became bands playing black metal such as Emperor, Limbonic Art, Zyklon and Gábor became interested in solo guitarists like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. After some concerts Dénes left the band since he could not identify with the more and more complex musical approach. He was replaced by Ervin Kiss from Libra, a great Death fanatic. The recordings of the first album began. The percussion was recorded in Hódmezovásárhely, in Faktor then they moved to Szeged and worked in a little studio in Tamás’ home. Having finished the instrumental parts, the band realised that they were in serious need of a pianist. Neither Dénes’ nor István’s experiments with the keyboard proved to be professional enough. Sándor met Gábor Szoke (a drummer by the way) at the Musical College. He has been a steady member ever since. (Emperor, Cryptopsy, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth). Ervin had to leave the band as well, since the members were not satisfied with his attitude to work. The new singer became Péter Bajusz, a friend of guitarist Gábor. His way of singing is inspired by Borknagar and Wintersorg. Mainly he listens to Iron Maiden and Dream Theater. Before the completion of the record Gábor and Péter left the band. They wanted to work in other styles. In December 2003 the first material Fall of Enigma (Horrification Rules on the Four Continents) came out which includes 6 songs (I Opus About the Fall; II. Shadow; III. Land of Enigma, IV: Fear; V. Labyrinth; VI. Save Our Land) in 63 minutes. The new guitarist became Ervin Magony (ex-Fagyhamu member) His favourites are Atheist, Cinic, Death, Psychotic Waltz, Morbid Angel, Opeth. The new singer Péter Csontos plays the piano in Paindrift and plays cello at the College.
