'Golden Handshake'
"The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Or in this case, the chocolate spread sandwhiches. Teen indie rock trio The Bottom Bunk only formed in April 2007 and already they’ve played a major festival (Leeds) and BBC radio session. The buzz about the band is building quicker than hornets at the honeypot and not just because they’ve got the best name in the business. Listen to the music and the instant success makes perfect sense. Rock is worthless if not played like it’s a matter of life and death and the urgency of songs like She’s In But She Doesn’t Wanna See You - a pleading dialogue with the mum of a fancied bird - shows these lads know it. Driven by Ian Ferguson’s ramming-speed drums, their tunes hurtle headlong into the fray where Will Howes’ bullying basslines and fearless vocals lock horns with Tom Milner’s combative guitars. Crossing the amphetamine frenzy of Bromheads Jacket with the Arctic’s smarts, the band’s recordings are raw, angular, infectious and every bit as thrilling as their sweaty live shows. Taking a lead from Jamie T and Alex Turner, Howes sings about what he knows - last night’s broken bottles, Ray Mears, The No 10 Bus and yes, Chocolate Spread Sandwiches. British music has been invigorated by the move to social realism and mining wit and passion from the hum-drum, The Bottom Bunk paints a picture of the teen experience every bit as vivid and honest as a YouTube video diary. To paraphrase their own lyrics, they’re making their choices and taking their chances and, on the strength of what they’ve already achieved, the opportunities should come thick and fast."
