Kayla Parker was born and raised in Detroit, MI. Being a native of Detroit she couldn’t help but be influenced by Detroit’s Gospel heritage. Growing up on the east side of Detroit she attended Pershing Highschool, while being influenced by the great Twinkie Clark she was inspired to start a group of her own with some fellow students, Meri Thomas, Latonya Holman, Shaundra Edwards and Donyale Jones. Kayla created a sound with these girls that had not been heard in Gospel before and got much repsect from their peers. Antun Foster who is a well respected musician help record their first Demo and helped them reached their musical goals. In 1989 Marvin L Winans of The Winans started Perfecting Church where kayla became a member of the choir Perfected Praise, 1992 they recorded their first album where Kayla was featured on 2 songs Now are we, which she wrote and Perfecting Church, the theme song of the church. In 1996 Special Gift finally recorded their debut album and released it on Crystal Rose Records, with the help of a great production team like Mario’’skeeter’’ Winans, Paul D. Allen, Donald lawerence and Micheal J Powell they gave gospel a refreshing face and sound.
Kayla is one of the most incredible writers and vocal arrangers in music period, she has worked with artist such as, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, CeCe Winans, Vickie Winans, Brandy, Thomas Whitfield and Company, The Clark Sisters, Mary Mary, Fred Hammond, the list goes on and on. With all these credits, you wouldn’t think a woman so talented would have one the greatest testimonies of overcoming cancer, yes in deed some years ago Kayla was diagnosed with cancer but because of the prayers of the saints and her holyghost filled mother Minister Aseneth Parker she overcame the illness and is back doing it like she been doing it ’’what’’ The devil is a liar.
Kayla relocated to Los Angelos to continue to pursue her career as a writer and producer and eventully met the love her life Mr. David Tolbert, so now she’s Kayla Parker Tolbert. With all this said kayla Parker Tolbert is truly a musician with incredible skill, talent and anoiting and this site is for everyone who knows it , loves her and appreciate the songs she has song and written over the years. Sorry to say Kayla Passed April 21, 2007 I started this site a few months ago not knowing she would leave us I guess God put it in my heart to celebrate her life and everything she ever did. I gonna miss her so much. Her dream will live in everybody she touched and inspired.
