James Timothy Daly was born March 1, 1956 in Suffern, New York--the youngest child in a theatrical family. His parents, actors James Daly and Hope Newell, met on the stage. He has four older sisters, including Tyne Daly, the accomplished star of Cagney & Lacey and Judging Amy. Tim toyed with the idea of becoming a musician or athlete but eventually enrolled in theater and literature at Bennington College, Vermont. His first professional job was doing summer stock. In a sad twist of fate, his father died the day Tim started rehearsals. Tim was only 21 and says, "It changed my life. I had to sink or swim on my own." After graduation in 1979 he worked for several seasons at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island. It was there Tim met his wife-to-be, actress Amy Van Nostrand.
Tim's first screen role came in 1982, playing alongside Paul Reiser, Kevin Bacon, Steve Guttenberg and Mickey Rourke in Diner. A year later he landed his first TV series, the medical drama Ryan's Four. He made his off-Broadway debut in 1984, followed by Broadway, where he earned a Tony nomination starring opposite Annette Bening in Coastal Disturbances. In 1988 Tim returned to television in the sitcom Almost Grown.
His big break was in 1990, when he was cast in the role of Joe Hackett on Wings. The popular series ran seven years and remains a favorite to this day. From 1996-1999 Tim voiced the Man of Steel for WB's animated series Superman. During the '90s he also starred in a number of films and mini-series--such as Stephen King's Storm of the Century--and forayed into producing. People Magazine ranked Tim Daly one of the "50 Most Beautiful People In The World".
In 2000, Tim earned a SAG nomination and a Golden Satellite Award for his portrayal of Richard Kimble in The Fugitive. (His father guest-starred twice on the original series in the '60s.) Tim once said the role that would fit him like a glove would be "an aloof, roguish, cynical guy who's also charming, amazingly accomplished and kind of rough." That could well describe his fire-and-ice gun-slinger in the 2002 feature The Outsider, with Naomi Watts. In 2006 People Magazine named Tim one of the "Sexiest Men Alive".
Tim has starred in two recent series for ABC, Eyes and The Nine, and also played a recurring role on The Sopranos, for which he received an Emmy nomination. This fall Tim returns to ABC in the new medical drama Private Practice, a Grey's Anatomy spinoff. In 2007 he and his wife celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. They have two grown children, Sam and Emelyn.
