Music:

Band Website: g-fabpromotions.com
Band Members: COGNAC SLIM
INTERVIEW 1/27/08
G-Fab: Tell us who Cognac Slim is and what's your background. =
CS: Ummm as far as my background, umm we been doing this for a minute. I grew up in Lauderdale went to Dillard High. I went to the Military for a little bit and got kicked out and just been on a constant grind ever since. Trying to get this music right. And it's been a long time coming but you know uh, we finally feel like we got our music up to a level we can compete and you know try to get some money out here man.
G-Fab: So on the personal side "why did you get kicked out of the military?
CS: Ahhh I'll just say it was misconduct (Laughing). It was a number of things that really lead up to it, you know fighting, disobeying direct orders you know.
G-Fab: Let's talk about what your working on right now. Is there an album out?
CS: Well our mixtape that's out in the streets right now that we tryin to get pumpin right now, it's called "The Hangova". Cognac Slim, The Hangover feat. my other half my homeboy Doobie. Got a lot of good collaborations on there. Ahh a lot of artists that I work with you know such as Klass E, Tony Blanco, uhh I got a song called Gettin Blowed feat Ball Greezy who got the song "Shone" that's going hard in the streetz right now. We got bout 29 cutz on there so...
G-Fab: Is this a 2 disc collection?
CS: Naw, 1 disc you know give it to you raw just uncut.
G-Fab: What's the 1st single off the album?
CS: OHH RIGHT NOW, I think the new hit for the summer gone be Touch Basis. It's a collaboration with me and my homeboy Doobie. It's a new hot song it fits right into the mold of dat, dat new laid back vibe music that's going on with Snoop Dogg, Shorty Red and Steve McCloud. It just fit right into that vibe. So I think that's gonna be the new single to look out for right now.
G-Fab: Aint nuthen laid back about dat track...I'll tell you right now.
CS: LOL
G-Fab: I aint gonna lie I been bumpin it since I got it from Vexx. I heard of you on a mixed tape by Luc Duc (formally of Iconz) a few years back. Are you still working with him?
CS: Well me and Luc Duc I mean we talk from time to time. I mean right now we haven't done anything lately. I guess he's still doing his thing. But currently we not doing anything right now but in the near future you might hear something.
G-Fab: Would you credit being on his cd as a start for you maybe in a since your rise to fame? As I said that's where I heard of you from and to be honest not to take any credit from him but you really shined on his mix tape. You were the one that really stood out to me.
CS: No no I definitely appreciate a lot of doors that Luc Duc walked me through. You Feel me? I feel like he did provide a lot of opportunities umm not to say that I wouldn't got there eventually. I just think that he cut the time ya know considerably. You know he really helped me get a jump start on networking and mingling with certain people to get me where I am right now.
G-Fab: Ok, ok, well who are some of your musical influences and who would you like to work with in the future?
CS: Ahh man every since I started rapping I aways said I wanted to do something with OutKast. You know that's, that's the reason why that's who really got me interested in rappin. The Outkast the whole Dungeon Mob Family. Ummm I dig a lot of artists man, I dig a lot of artists out there. But I like a lot of ol skool people; 8Ball & MJG, uhh Too Short, you know JT Money you know the old skool South Florida...Posion Clan all that. I got a lot of musical influences not just that though. I listen to a lot of ol skool Earth Wind & Fire, Gapp Band, The Commodores all that. I listen to a plethora of music I don't just stay to one genre. I got a lot of musical influences.
G-Fab: How would you describe your music to people and what image do you think it conveys?
CS: Well I mean I'm just a...I like to portray this to the regular everyday dude. You know what I'm saying? That everybody can relate to . I like to make music for everybody. I like to make music for people if you out there in the streets and you thuggin, I like to make music for people if you in love wit chur spouse. I like to make music for all the freaky people out there. If you going to 9-5 tryin to make your cash everyday. I mean it's whatever, whatever I feel like writing about. I feel like I can relate too cause I done been in alot of, I done did a lot of things, been in a lot of different positions. I'm a Jack of All Trades, so I feel like I can relate to alot of people.
G-Fab: Do you feel the rap game is missing something right now and maybe you posses it and can feel the void?
CS: Umm I'm not gonna necessarily say I can fill a void but you know, It's just the rap game is in a different transition to when I was growing up you know. It's not about a political aspect, political issues no more. It's about ballin, who got the biggest chain, who selling the most dope, who got the biggest gun.
G-Fab: Right
CS: That's really what it's about, but I mean to each is own cause apparently somebody buying it cuz it's doing pretty well. But for me myself I just try to be real to who I am. I feel that a lot of people just scared to be themselves. I meet a lot of people that's in the game that's trying to do their thing but it's like they scared to be themselves cause they don't know how the public gonna receive them. You know? If you not a balla or a 2 time 3 time felon you know what I'm saying it's really hard to get that respect especially in the rap game in the way it's done evolved. You know what I'm sayin?
G-Fab: I feel you completely. What are you your immediate music career goals and long term goals?
CS: My immediate goal right now is just try to get this Hangova mix tape buzzin in da streets. You know just hopefully try to build off that and see where it takes me. Eventually I wanna I wanna get my album out there.
G-Fab: What would you consider success? What would you define as success?
CS: Umm being successful just leaving a legacy man just being a music pioneer, saying that you know I want everybody to look and say that dude there did it from the heart. I'm saying he really put his soul and his passion in his music. For me as long as my kids and everything straight, shhh that will be success.
G-Fab: How many kids?
CS: 2
G-Fab: What performance experience do you have?
CS: Live performance? We actually opened up for the Scream tour at the Jackie Gleason one time, I forgot what year that was, back in 2000 something.
G-Fab: How did that go? How'd the crowd receive you?
CS: Ohh that was excellent; the show was great. The reception was great we basically took over the show. They wanted to cut us short but the crowd you know what I'm sayin was beggin for us. So we ended up finishing out the whole set. I don't think they wanted us to drown out the energy of the crowd before Marques Houston got on stage. That's basically what they told us.
G-Fab: LOL so you basically showed out?
CS: Yea, we did that one. After the concert we were taking pictures with the photographers and the ladies wanted us to take pictures with them wit our shirts off, it was crazy.
G-Fab: Yeah, I heard the ladies love them some Cognac Slim.
CS: LOL well I don't know I don't get a chance to see, I'm pretty much a home body. So I don't get to see but I hear things. LOL
G-Fab: Umm hum well I'm sure we'll find out soon.
CS: LOL
G-Fab: What producers you working wit?
CS: I got a lot of producers...my homie Nick Trouble producing a lot of tracks up coming producer in Lauderdale. You don't know bout him check him out. I got production from Gorilla Tech, Drum Majors, Taz I got a few people I know I'm probably forgetting a few people. But quite a few people.
G-Fab: Your singed to a an Indie label right?
CS: Yea, Make A Choice Ent. w/ Vexx Music Group.
G-Fab: Last question who should people contact if they wanna book Cognac Slim for a show, interview or get some music?
CS: Ahh Man www.myspace.com/makeachoiceent my main man "Mr. Everything" Vexx Millionaire 754-423-6699. You can holla at em he'll take care of anything.
G-Fab: Well thank you for the exclusive interview, looking forward to seeing you do big thangs in 08. Anything else you'd like to add?
CS: Just wanna say I loveeee, I mean absolutely adore my haters. You know what I'm sayin? Because w/out them I probably wouldn't be motivated right now. I just wanna give a shout out to my family, my friends, my homies the city of Lauderdale you know L's Up!
