Hi There We are an independent record store based in Dublin, Ireland (yeah, there are still a few of us left, but not for long if things keep going like they are now). We sell music covering many different genres including Indie Rock, Rock, Reggae, Electronica, Jazz, Blues, Folk and anything else that takes our fancy.
We sell a huge amount of music from local independent Irish artists, the kind that don't have record deals and probably don't want the restrictions of one either, they just like doing things for themselves just like us really. We have one of the largest catalogues of independent Irish releases in the whole wide world (what a claim, but we like to think its true)
We are situated just off a busy shopping street called Georges Street here in Dublin and we have been here since 1997. We are near the Georges Street arcade, right beside the Market Bar if you know it.
The shop is run by Julie and Dave in the old fashioned way, who doesn't love a bit of human interaction nowadays. We like to consider ourselves to be very friendly and approachable, we are not musical snobs, we just love music and therefore like to make shopping in Road a more friendly experience. Who knows, if we like you we may even make you a cup of coffee.
We sell cds and vinyl (including those little 7" things) in the store and we also run a very successful mail order company. We can ship items all over the world.

BRAD BARR - THE FALL APARTMENT INSTRUMENTAL GUITAR the debut solo album from guitarist brad barr who is also a member of the slip. the album features a really beautiful selection of instrumental guitar pieces bringing to mind some of the classic sounds of the takoma label and in particular the early years of both john fahey and robbie basho. barr goes for a much slower picking style to some of the more modern instrumental folk guitar players around at the moment and because of this the album has a much more calming almost meditative fell about it. the album features a rather superb instrumental folky take on the nirvanas track heartshaped box too. october 2008 tompkins square cd €17.99 (click here to buy)

VIC CHESNUTT WITH ELF POWER AND THE AMORPHOUS STRUMS - DARK DEVELOPMENTS brand new collaboration between songwriter vic chesnutt and elephant 6 outfit elf power. if anything this new collection from chesnutt carries on the more band orientated themes of his last album north star destroyer which say him work with a host of guest musicians again. elf power give the proceedings a lovely raw live electric feel and for some reason kind of bring to mind the rough pop sounds of early velvet underground on certain tracks. there is still plenty of chesnutts rootsy americana in the mix for long time fans of his work which sees the band simply adding extra volume to his sound with plenty of fuzzing guitars and sweet organ sounds. this man just gets better every time he enters a studio. october 2008 orange twin cd €16.99 (click here to buy)

JAMES YORKSTON - WHEN THE HAAR ROLLS IN [special offer, normally retails at €18.99] the fourth studio album from one of scotlands finest modern folk singers around at the moment. yorkston is backed by long time outfit the athletes along with folk legends norma waterson, mike waterson, marry gilhooly and olly knight. the album is a beautifully mellow collection of pretty much all acoustic sounds which sees yorkston going back to his intimate roots. its pretty much one man and his guitar with just little touches of fiddle and harmonium added in to the mix. yorkston has a rare gift of being able to merge the old and new with his brand of traditional tinged folk music. fans of everything from will oldham to lambchop will simply adore this new collection. september 2008 domino cd €14.50 (click here to buy)

FIGHT LIKE APES - JAKE SUMMERS taken from the forthcoming debut album on the model citizen label. this track was released late last year as a limited edition 7 inch single and also featured on their debut ep on fifa records. the ep now comes with two new tracks including corey pop and a spherical mix of snore bore whore. this is a classic piece of explosive shouty indie rock calling to mind the likes of the pixies, the breeders with some of the agression of the riot grrl sound. the track opens up with a big chunky bassline before heavy synth sounds and grungey guitar kick in. then throw in a voice sounding like kim deal gargling on sandpaper. september 2008 model citizen cds €2.99 (click here to buy)

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE - JOURNEY INTO THE COSMIC INFERNO acid mothers temple return with their newest reincarnation aka the cosmic inferno. cotton candy is no longer a member of the band and pikachu from japanese noise makers afrirampo has now joined the fold on drums and vocals. as with every acid mothers temple album this really needs to be listened to as one long piece rather than six individual tracks. the album is a classic piece of slow building psychedelic rock beginning with tons of hypnotic sitar like sounds and slowly turning into a monstrous fuzzed up guitar heavy jam. towards the end the explosive guitar solo action is joined by some tribal like vocal chanting and wailing oscillator like sound effects. i know these guys release a lot of albums every year but this truly is one of their finest to date. october 2008 very friendly cd €19.99 (click here to buy)
ALIAS - RESURGAM the first solo album from alias in five years and the long awaited follow up to muted. the album features guest spots from yoni wolk aka why and also the one am radio. whilst alias bases a lot of his tracks in gentle hip hop beats there is much more going on with this album than you might expect from an anticon release. there are elements of the pure dream like guitar sounds of ulrich schnauss on quite a few tracks. there could also be comparisons to the looping sounds of four tet and even the laid back electronica of boards of canada with parts akin to a more instrumental postal service. at times its like some kind of post rock shoegazing electronica with big chunky broken beats. october 2008 anticon cd €15.99 (click here to buy)
ALL NEW ADVENTURES OF US - BEST LOVED GOODNIGHT TALES the first album from this northampton based seven piece outfit for the one little indian label. an album of catchy melodic and rather quirky indie pop gems sounding a wee bit like the meeting of arcade fire and belle and sebastian. the album has some of the big euphoric group sounds of arcade fire whilst also having a lovely kind of twee indie pop feel about it with lots of bursts of big brass. there is a bit of a psyche folk pop feel about the album with gentle hints of the chamber pop of sufjan stevens but with a very english slant on that kind of sound. october 2008 one little indian cd €14.50 (click here to buy)
ALVA NOTO - UNITXT raster noton regular carsten nicolai returns with one of his most rhythmic records to date. the album is full of pounding heavily processed sound effects to create the most basic sounding beats. its hard not to find some comparisons to the early kraftwerk sounds and in particular their work on the radio activity album. as with all of nicolais work there is a harsh brittleness about the collection which sees beats created by broken signals whilst all manner of glitchy and scratching sound effects swarm around in the mix. the album also features two vocal tracks featuring poet anne james chaton doing a fine impersonation of an early b movie robot. the album is split into two quite distinct halves and after track ten carsten delves back into the beatless ambient soundscapes of old again. october 2008 raster noton cd €18.99 (click here to buy)
ARMOURED BEAR - HONEYCOMB MOONS the debut album from this new irish based outfit on the blind chicken label. the band is pretty much based around multi instrumentalist anthony noonan with lots of help from herby macken and keith clancy. the album is a lovely intimate collection of slightly folky tinged sounds comparable to elliott smith at times with lots of added electronic loops and samples. its a beautiful blend of live acoustic instruments and mellow keyboard sounds with a couple of really gentle indie pop gems thrown in amongst the more laid back vibes. comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve too. october 2008 blind chicken cd €14.99 (click here to buy)
ASVA - WHAT YOU DONT KNOW IS FRONTIER asva are led by ex burning witch and goatsnake member stuart dahlquist and also features other members of burning witch, mr bungle and earth. the album features four rather lenghty pieces of thunderous metal drones with the added menace of church organs and earth like twangy guitars. its a real slow building collection of songs with slowly strummed guitars doing battle with some haunting keyboard sound effects and pounding rolling drum sounds. track three sees the rare introduction of vocals as a choir like effect provides the backbone for some witch like chanting. its one of those rare doom rock albums that manages to be both menacing and very beautiful at the same time just like sunn o, boris and earth all jamming together. september 2008 southern lord cd €17.99 (click here to buy)

BE TRUE TO YOUR SCHOOL - FORTUNA POP PRESENTS [VARIOUS ARTISTS] a collection of 25 gems from the fortuna pop vaults. fortuna pop is a long running totally independent english based indie label releasing all kinds of high quality underground music for nearly 13 years now and this is a perfect collection of the diverse sounds that the label believes in. the album features tracks from discordia. tender trap, sodastream, bearsuit, mark 700, cannonball jane, the chemistry experiment, the loves, micktravis, the butterflies of love, spraydog, international strike force, twinkie, the lucksmiths, mj hibbert, taking pictures, airport girl, mogul, milky wimpshake, the aislers set, would be goods, comet gain and homescience. comes in a card digipack sleeve with detailed booklet featuring lots of humurous stories on the bands. october 2008 fortuna pop cd €7.50 (click here to buy)
JAMES BLACKSHAW - LITANY OF ECHOES the sixth studio album from this truly exceptionally talented modern folk guitarist. this guy is probably one of the most interesting fahey like guitarist around at the moment and just when you think you know his sound he comes along with this total gem of a record to blow us all away. the opening track features blackshaw on piano with fran bury guesting on violin. its almost like he has transformed his mesmerizing guitar picking style onto the piano resulting in something more akin to the likes of steve reich or philip glass. blackshaw returns to his familiar twelve string guitar for the second track and its probably one of his finest so far in our opinion. the album is almost bordering on modern classical at times and sounds like the guitar work of john fahey playing the hypnotic grooves of steve reich. its one of the most beautifully atmospheric albums of the year so far. october 2008 tomkins square cd €17.99 (click here to buy)
BUFFALO KILLERS - LET IT RIDE [LIMITED EDITION RED VINYL PRESSING] this is the second album to date from the buffalo killers on alive recordings. the album was produced by the much in demand dan auerback from the black keys. whilst these guys are definitely deeply rooted in the blues rock sounds of bands like the black keys the also incorporate a lot more psyche rock and pure seventies groove heavy rock into the mix. you can almost hear the ghost of rory gallagher at times along with hints of early zeppelin, neil young, blue cheer, cream, mountain and the allman brothers. its a fine collection of totally sludged up blues rock with plenty of explosive guitar solo action. limited edition red vinyl pressing. only 500 copies available worldwide. october 2008 alive lp €16.99 (click here to buy)
DAN BURKE WITH THOMAS DIMUZIO - UPCOMING EVENTS collaboration between electroacoustic sound sculptor thomas dimuzio and illusion of safety member dan burke. the album features 15 pieces of menacing drone based sounds with lots of slow building brittle soundscapes, glitchy sound effects and found sounds. sounding at times like a slightly more drone based fennesz crossed with the harsh sound effects of the raster noton label. the album swings from some totally calming ambient drones based around lush synths to the more harsh tones of the likes of biosphere. october 2008 no fun productions cd €17.99 (click here to buy)

CORRUGATED TUNNEL - I AM CORRUGATED irish based electronic producer edwin james returns with his second full length album on the seedyr label. the album is a beautifully ambient collection of totally laid back and blissful electro and techno sounds with hints of everything from early four tet to the pulsating sounds of boards of canada. the added guitar sounds on this new album give the album a slight dream pop feel at times as cocteau twins like guitars are layered over lush synth passages. there are plenty of tracks on here that fans of the likes of ulrich schnauss will just adore. really lovely stuff. september 2008 seedyr cd €13.99 (click here to buy)
D RRADIO - D RRADIO REMIXED features a selection of remixes from their self titled album released earlier this year. features remixes from cathode, manual, populous, dept effect, the matinee orchestra, ylid, juxta phona, piano magic, metthew rozeik and port royal. the album features a lovely collection of mostly laid back late night electronica with the majority of remixes keeping the spirit of the original album in mind. its very much on the side of blissed out lush electronica with a certain feel thats suits headphone listening. fans of the likes of four tet, boards of canada and labels like touch or city centre offices will love this one. october 2008 distraction records cd €17.99 (click here to buy)
DIANOGAH - QHNNNL this post rock outfit have been on a long break since their last album millions of brazilians in 2002. the band return with a slightly new sound adding vocals this time to their ultra lush brand of slighly jazzy tinged post rock sounds. multi instrumentalist andrew bird adds violin to several tracks on the album. the album falls somewhere between the jazzy post rock of karate and the much more aggressive sounds of slint or shellac. features some lovely intricate guitar work which works so well with the addition of birds lush string sounds on the more mellow tunes. august 2008 southern lp €18.99 (click here to buy)
THE ETTES - LOOK AT LIFE AGAIN SOON new york based three piece outfit return with their second album and again recorded at the legendary toe rag studios in london. this is definitely one for lovers of groove heavy garage rock and blues ala detroit cobras, dirtbombs or even the white stripes. its full of punked up garage blues sounds with that totally authentic almost live sounding raw feel about it. october 2008 take root cd €17.99 (click here to buy)
GENGHIS TRON - ROUND UP THE HOUSE REMIXES VOLUME ONE [LIMITED EDITION COLOURED VINYL] limited edition mini album featuring four very special exclusive remixes on the always reliable temporary residence label. steve moore opens up the album with his throbbing space rock mix of board up the house sounding like kraftwerk jamming with early tangerine dream full of lush retro synth action. jesu aka justin broadrick delivers a sublime piece of godflesh like industrial ambience with his remix of colonly collapse. its probably the closest thing he has done to the godflesh sound since going out on his own. pinback frontman rob crowe opens up the second side with a rather bizarre piece of breakcore metal meets mariachi electronica on his remix of things dont look good. the album is closed with a lenghty piece of ambient beauty from eluvium with their mix of ergot. the album is limited to 1000 copies on marble effect multicoloured vinyl. october 2008 temporary residence lp €15.99 (click here to buy)
HOLLY GOLIGHTLY AND THE BROKEOFFS - DIRT DONT HURT the second album from holly golightly and the brokeoffs. basically the band features holly on guitars and vocals along with lawyer dave on drums. its probably one of her most stripped down albums to date too. the album really harks back to the classic early days of fifties rock and roll along with lots of early country and folk sounds. its full of the rustic sounds of banjo, fiddle, washboard and all kinds of traditional instruments. imagine a slightly more rustic sixties garage take on the sounds of the likes of gillian welch. its certainly a new departure from her trademark sixties garage sound and a real rustic gem it is too. october 2008 damaged goods lp €17.99 (click here to buy)
GRAILS - DOOMSDAYERS HOLIDAY grails return with possibly their darkest collection of atmospheric post rock sounds on the temporary residence label. the album opens up with a great big explosion of guitar based noise sounding like some doom rock band covering one of ennio morricones classic spaghetti western soundtracks. the album is pretty much split between totally blissed out atmospheric post rock sounds and some truly thunderous metal edged tracks. there are elements of godspeed, mogwai, the dirty three, earth right up to some truly beautiful cinematic like soundscapes. its all perfectly intricate with plenty of lingering notes just left hanging in the air. the album also features a guest vocal spot from sun city girls member alan bishop. october 2008 temporary residence cd €15.99 (click here to buy)
HAMMOCK - MAYBE THEY WILL SING FOR US TOMORROW hammock return with the follow up to their rather beautiful collection raising your voice trying to stop an echo from 2007 also on the darla label. the majority of pieces on this much more ambient collection were actually written for an art exhibition held by jonsi from sigur ros in arizona.the pieces on the album are like the most perfect meeting of the shoegazing guitar sound and drone based ambient music. the guitars are simply drenched in reverb to such a degree that one single note seems to last forever whilst tons of swirling drone based sounds come into the mix to create an almost orchestral effect. definitely one for fans of the kranky label sound, ambient post rock ala sigur ros and possibly the early nineties shoegazing movement. really gorgeous stuff. october 2008 darla cd €17.99 (click here to buy)
HEAD LIKE A KITE - THERE IS LOUD LAUGHTER EVERYWHERE head like a kite is based around producer dave einmo and also features guest spots from members of smoosh, the long winters, radio 4, crooked fingers and preston school of industry. this is one of the more unusual albums to come out of the mush label in quite some time whilst some of the tracks do feature their trademark underground hip hop beats this is much more of an electronic funky indie pop album. at times it kind of reminds me of a more laid back lcd soundsystem jamming with beck. there are plenty of funky beats but this one has lots of added fuzzy guitar sounds. october 2008 mush cd €12.99 (click here to buy)
JAY REATARD - SINGLES 06 07 [IN THE RED COMPILATION] not to be confused with the new collection of singles from 2008 on the matador this collection featuring a host of out of print singles from jay reatard released on many different labels in 2006 and 2007. pretty much all of these singles are sold out and impossible to track down so this is your best way to gather them all together. the album features 17 rare gems from one of the most profilific songwriters around at the moment. he may release a single nearly every month but the quality simply never drops with reatard. the tracks have all been remastered by reatard himself. this here is a man who can so easily turn his hand to everything from scuzzed up indie rock to punk to new wave to pure indie pop within the space of just one album. the album also comes packaged with a bonus dvd featuring live performances from the vpro in the netherlands, the sailor jerry store in philadelphia, las vegas and the cakeshop in brooklyn. october 2008 in the red 2cd €19.99 (click here to buy)
JESU - WHY ARE WE NOT PERFECT justin broadrick returns with a tracks appearing on cd for the very first time. the first three tracks on this five track mini album were originally released as a limited edition vinyl only release on the temporary residence label as part of a split release with eluvium. the tracks featured are farewell, why are we not perfect and also blind and faithless. the album also features two new alternate versions of farewell and why are we not perfect. along with his deep love of all things dreampop and shoegazing broadrick now adds his dreamy treated vocals into the mix on the title track to stunning effect. the album features all his trademark sounds with lots of reverb laden drum machines, layers and layers of guitars and droning synth noises. truly awesome stuff. october 2008 hydrahead cd €9.99 (click here to buy)
LAMBCHOP - OH OHIO [LIMITED EDITION WITH BONUS CD] the return of one of the finest and most consistent alt country outfits fronted by the very talented kurt wagner. the band have been totally stripped down to the core eight piece for most of this recording which gives much more emphasis on the likes of slide guitar and rhodes piano than the last few collections. theres less strings on this one but much more of a laid back older nashville feel. the pedal steel guitars and electric pianos are just the perfect accompaniment to wagners deep tones. this album reminds me quite a lot of the more laid back moments on nixon or what another man spills. its hard not to resurrect the old cliche of a return to form with this one. classic lambchop and a welcome reminder to why we started loving them in the first place. this version comes in a limited foldout digipack sleeve and features a bonus five track cd. the bonus cd features please rise, slipped dissolved and loosed, close up, of raymond and a cover of the leonard cohen track chelsea hotel 2, october 2008 city slang 2cd €18.99 (click here to buy)
LAND OF TALK - SOME ARE LAKES this montreal based outfit return with the follow up the last years album applause cheer boo hiss on one little indian. the album is another delicious slice of both rootsy indie pop sounds and beautiful laid back folky based sounds. the more mellow acoustic based tracks kind of remind me of a more lo fi indie take on the likes of gillian welch. the more uptempo electric tunes have a similar feel to some of the breeders stuff or even juliana hatfield but with a slightly more rootsy vibe about them. october 2008 one little indian cd €17.50 (click here to buy)
DAWN LANDES - DAWNS MUSIC limited edition double cd collection of old and new material from one of the finer folky singer songwriters out there at the moment. the album features her debut album dawns music from 2005 which was previously only available as an import on a french label. the album now comes packaged with a bonus disc which features her track straight lines which featured recently on a tv advert. the bonus disc also features her excellent cover of young folk by peter bjorn and john. the album is a sultry late night meeting of old time folk based sounds and modern avant folk sounds. her sound falls somewhere between the likes of cat power and joanna newsom. the album comes beautifully packaged in a deluxe foldout card digidpack sleeve. october 2008 2cd €13.99 (click here to buy)
LAU NAU - NUKKOU some more kooky brilliance from finland and this time its not on the fonal label. lau nau is finnish based multi instrumentalist and all round experimentalist laura naukkarinen. this is her second release for the locust label and any fans of her first album kuutarha will fall in love with this one instantly. it features tons of nature based found sounds coupled with all sorts of odd acoustic instruments to create some kind of skewed psyche folk sounding both traditionally finnish and japanese at the same time. its very much on the kooky twee side of psyche folk and rather beautiful it is too. lots of strange sounding bowed instruments, plucked harps and naukkarinens voice which sounds like joanna newsom out on a forest walk. october 2008 locust cd €14.99 (click here to buy)
LIKE A KIND OF MATADOR - HALFWAY TO DANGEROUS the debut album from this english based doom rock three piece on the tumult label. its pretty much classic back to basics early stoner rock on show here with lots of ambient psychedelic twists and turns thrown in. there are definitely touches of early kyuss and even some of the more psyche toned ambient moments of the legendary desert sessions. i suppose you could probably call this stoner prog as vocalist sarah mcwatt also doubles up as flute player adding a certain comparison to the likes of bardo pond when the tracks move into their more contemplative phases. sadly the band finished this truly excellent debut album and then proceeded to disband so this is the first and last album you are going to hear from them. september 2008 tumult cd €14.99 (click here to buy)
CHARLIE LOUVIN - STEPS TO HEAVEN features ten traditional gospel classics along with two self penned tunes from louvin himself. the album was recorded by mark nevers and was made almost totally live with a full gospel choir back up louvin. charlie louvin was originally a member of the legendary gospel duo the louvin brothers who released the classic album satan is real way back in 1960. this album finds louvin in a very laid back mood and the album kind of reminds me at times of the johnny cash american recordings series. its very much the work of a man showing his age as far as his voice is concerned but if anything that just adds to the brittle feel of the album. his voice is the real central piece to this collection with mostly just piano and backing vocals to accompany him. a really joyous and intimate affair. october 2008 tompkins square cd €17.99 (click here to buy)
LUCKY DRAGONS - DREAM ISLAND LAUGHING according to the press release that came with this album we are now at album number 18 from la based lucky dragons. the album features some exceptionally high quality improvised electronica which sounds to me like black dice, matmos and animal collective all getting busy in the studio. the album has been perfectly edited in the studios afterwards and only the finest qualitly allowed on to this 22 track collection. its a rather schizophrenic collection with lots of psyche electronica, krautrock experimentalism and throbbing electronica. its both melodic and utterly mental at the same time. lovers of the above mentioned bands will simply adore this one. october 2008 marriage cd €18.99 (click here to buy)

OWL SERVICE - A GARLAND OF SONG a rather haunting collection of retro sounding english folk music here from the owl service. an album very much rooted in the seventies prog folk sounds of the likes of fairport convention. the album features 13 traditional folk songs given a very prog folk feel with some gentle hints of eastern european folk and hypnotic sitar action. comparable at times to the likes of espers the album features some beautifully haunting female voices awash with reverb just to add extra atmosphere. comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. october 2008 southern cd €17.99 (click here to buy)
REAL TUESDAY WELD - THE LONDON BOOK OF THE DEAD their first proper full length album since i lucifer way back in 2004. the band is based around multi instrumentalist stephen coates. this man is obviously an avid collector of old records and found sounds as he uses these in an intricate cut and paste fashion to create the backbone for what is an utterly intrigueing collection of weird pop genius. there is no one particular genre to slot this in to as elements of scratchy old jazz records slowly turn into eastern european pop complete with funky electronic hip hop beats. coates and his backing band have a great ability to put together some of the most unlikely sounds into the same track and believe me it just works so well. its a highly intricate collection of sounds and only works because of the fun you can imagine them having in the studio putting all this together. we highly recommend you at least have a listen. october 2008 antique beat cd €16.99 (click here to buy)

YOUNG WIDOWS - OLD WOUNDS this is the second album from young widows who were formed from the ashes of breather resist after the departure of steve sindoni. this album is basically made up of several hours of live performances and live studio recordings spliced together afterwards in the studios. thus the album has a lovely raw live feel about it. fans of everything from shellac to the jesus lizard to early nirvana are going to simply adore this collection of sleazy math rock sounds. its a thunderous assault of post punk and math rock sounds full of intense guitar heavy tracks featuring lots of intricate drums and scuzzy bass effects. october 2008 temporary residence cd €14.99 (click here to buy)
CALEXICO - CARRIED TO DUST [LIMITED EDITION DIGI PACK SLEEVE] calexico return with possibly one of their finest album of the last ten years. in fact the album actually sounds like all the best bits of calexico wrapped into one convenient 45 minute package. the album kind of reminds me of a classic best of except this is all brand new material from joey burns and john convertino. the classic tex mex brass sound is really back in force from their earlier albums as is the rather beautiful acoustic folky roots vibe. there is plenty of the joyous mariachi sounds back again on this one which really brings them back to the great sounds of the black light and hot rail albums again. the album features sam beam from iron and wine, doug mccombs from tortoise, canadian singer pieta brown, amparo sanchez, jairo zavala and mickey raphael from willie nelsons band. september 2008 city slang cd €14.50 (click here to buy)
