Profile GeneratorAnyway, have you heard of him or his music before? Well, COLIN is described by his friends as fun loving, good listener, lover not a fighter, one of the most down-to-earth people AND one of those rare people who can inspire you to be a better person .. to smile more and to live a life as a gift. He is light hearted, sweet, always happy, doesn't let anything get him down, perceptive about life and accomplished surfer. He is the one who makes people smile with his kooky personality and pizza eating (?!)......
And Colin's music? Well his friends described as very relaxing and said: Its the type of music that you could play and instantly groove to - your choice pick. For instance while driving... it kind off makes time go by. When you feel down you listen to his CD and suddenly your spirits are lifted. He engages his audience without lot of energy. His voice is sweet, his music simple and yet powered by a lot of soul and his melachonic voice. He's really talented and passionate about music but mainly his music is driven by his personality - they all agreed! .......
SERIOUS INTRO: Colin's journeys as a pro surfer has brought him to the distant shores of Australia, Tahiti, Mexico and New Zealand then back again. His passion toward life has a direct, positive influence on all who are in his presence. Colin's ..nice to be nice.. attitude is infectious as he is always smiling both in and out of the water. He has been surfing professionally for about 10 years however Colin's adventures as a guitarist, song writer and front man that leads up the Retro Reggae/Ska band "The Big Sound" is where his next journey begins. Colin has been playing gigs in and around Southern California for about 5 years now; from San Diego, Los Angeles to local venues such as Velvet Jones and Zoey's Cafe in Ventura. His hard work and dedication as a musician lead him to the path of his next dream destination and the release of his latest CD.....................
Are you still reading? Gooood ..... NOW INTERVIEW ....
LP: So Colin when did your interest as a guitarist/musician begin?
Colin: As a young kid I figured out how to play the piano by ear. From there, any instrument that I could get my hands on I wanted to learn. It wasn't until much later that I finally got my hands on a guitar. My friend let me take it home for a few days to borrow and ended up giving it to me later that year. It's much easier to bring a guitar to the beach, than a piano anyhow. I've had the same guitar for about 8 years now, and I've recorded almost the whole album with it.
LP:Who were your major influences in surfing, music and life?
Colin:
Surfing: Mike Lamm, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Taylor Knox, and lately, I really like Mick Fanning
Music: Ken Boothe, Desmond Dekker, Delroy Wilson, John Holt, Alton Ellis, Sam Cooke (Those are the singers I like. I can give to you my influences for every instrument but that would be way too many names that you've never heard of).
Life: I like to take bits and pieces of good things I hear from the good people I surround myself with.
LP: How did you gain such a passion for traditional SKA music?
Colin: Some people call it a passion... but it's really an obsession. It started in Junior High listening to British Ska bands like The Specials, and The English Beat. From then on I started listening to the Jamaican Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae. It's music that just moves my soul.
LP: So your new album "Let’s get Away" releases in February 2007.. What was the inspiration behind the album?
Colin: Well, I have always written and played Jamaican music with the various bands that I've been a part of, but I write a lot of different other styles as well. This whole album is the other side of my music writing that I don't really show too often. It's mostly acoustic music, really plain and simple, just how I like to live. I'm really proud of it!
LP: Do you have a favorite song from the new album and if so why?
Colin: I would have to say "Cool Your Jets" because it makes me smile every time I listen to it.
LP: Out of all of the places you have traveled where is your favorite place to surf and why?
Colin: It's really hard to say because each spot has its own unique quality to it. I do enjoy Hapiti in Tahiti. It's a perfect reef pass (what more can you ask for?) I really enjoyed New Zealand. It's so beautiful, and the waves are really fun. It's a bit like California surf.
LP: Any words of advice or ideals to live by?
Colin: It's nice to be nice.
LP:What's next for you?
Colin: I will be looking to tour with my new record.
LP:Who would you like to thank?
Colin: Boogie, James Brown, & the Crocodile Hunter
