The name of my management company - In A City - comes from a band that Ken Johnson and I set up in the mid seventies. Oh that nostalgia thing! For a very brief time we had a wonderful singer with us called Angie Jones. But Angie dumped us for a tour with Renee Geyer – which was fair enough - and as a replacement she suggested her younger, curly headed brother Vince. Vince turned up at a band practise out the back of the old Nucleus agency in St. Kilda and sang unaccompanied – coz none of the guys new the song – ‘All In Love Is Fair’. What a voice! Unfortunately In A City wasn’t playing anything like the kind of material Vince liked so that was all we got.
Anyway - In A City – the band – didn’t last very long. I think we did one gig at The Champion Hotel in Fitzroy. And soon after that I gave Vince a ring and asked him if he would be interested in getting together on some new songs Ken and I had started to write with a view to forming a new band. We did these demos in 1978 at Mixmaster Studios – a little four-track studio in Glenhuntly Road, Glenthuntly and invited a few musicians along. Wayne didn’t end up in the band but we recorded his song ‘I Love You’. And super composer, Roger Campbell played the solo in ‘Have To Be With You’. I cant quite remember how long Stash played around for but Vince left the group after a gig at the Glasshouse Hotel in Collingwood and went back to Sydney to begin his wonderful solo career. I shall take the blame – as usual - for the production. And I’m sorry guys I know there are some bloopers! I’m afraid 30 years and copious amounts of red wine have taken the toll on memory so there are names I cant remember. If anyone can, please let me know! There were shots of Vince too that were taken at the sessions that have gone walkabout as well. Gawd knows what happened to them. We recorded ‘Saturdays’ several times including a version at Channel 9 studios in Richmond but I have put up the original version coz Ken played guitar on this one and I always liked it the best! Thanks guys for the memories! And thanks, once again, to Steve Phillips for his help getting this together. David Lord.
