Cedric Mayfield

I am currently playing clarinet and saxophone with the U.S. Air Force Band of the West. I began learning music at 4 years old, taking piano lessons, which would later be exchanged for clarinet and drums. After hearing "Night in Tunisia" played live, I fell in love with jazz on the spot, picked up sax at SMU during my undergrad studies, and began doubling. I started a jazz combo called "All That Jazz" that gigged around the Dallas area for a few years. I then went on the road with the musical "The Music Man" for a year. After finishing out the contract, I moved to Memphis for a couple of years to finish a Master's Degree. I love Music in all its facets. Music is the vessel God gave me to communicate with others. It's the gift he gave the world that allows us to communicate without saying a word, either with others or with ourselves. Music can be felt by and shared between people who speak different languages, live in different cultures, in different parts of the world. Athletes listen before games, film makers use it to capture emotional nuances, children use it to learn fundamental tools, people use music every day to alter their moods or to get through difficult situations (like working out), and for thousands of years music was and still is linked directly to worship and praise in various religions.
