BIO
Once upon a time (well, in the mid 90s), there were two twin brothers. One played guitar and the other played drums, so it didn't take long before they were jamming together and looking to form a band. Members came and members went, until they happened upon a talented schoolfriend who could sing, rap and play bass (a bit...). Thus was born the classic lineup of Attic, who enjoyed a decent amount of success with their melodic punk shenanigans on the North Yorkshire music scene during the early part of the decade. Come 2002, however, a drummer gone away to uni and a guitarist and bassist on their respective gap years meant that Attic looked to have bitten the dust.
Or maybe not...
Regrouping in Leeds in late 2003, CJ (guitar), Andrew (drums) and Mike (vocals/bass) decided to reform the band. A bit of fun, nothing too serious. Later Attic songs had enjoyed more of a ska feel, and the three decided to indulge their new found love of Sublime and the Long Beach sound by incorporating reggae influences into their music. Mike decided to give up the bass, partly to allow his vocals to become the focus of his performance and partly because his bass only had three functioning tuning pegs. And so the search for a bassist who didn't need a set of pliers to tune his E string was on...
... and then it was over. Andrew had met a drunken fool by the name of Andy during his fresher year. He was fairly inexperienced on bass, but willing to learn because he thought it would probably be a good way to impress girls. The foursome hired out rehearsal studios in the urban jungle of Armley, Leeds for the next three months, writing an initial batch of seven songs that reflected the diverse punk, metal, ska and dub influences of the individual members. (Andy would later say that the first rehearsal with the band was far more nerve- wracking than his first ever gig, as it was the first time he'd ever played in front of anyone, ever!)
After this time, the newly renamed Attic Project played their first ever gig at Leeds' famous Josephs Well venue. More gig offers soon followed, and it quickly became apparent that the band had the potential to be far more than the passtime that the three original members had reformed it as. The Attic Project began to play gigs further afield, and were watched by Led Zeppelin engineer Stuart Epps on the recommendation of his son, (a close friend of the band) during their first trip to London. Epps liked what he saw, and told the band that he would be more than interested in working with them. He would eventually produce the bands debut EP, entitled 'How's My Driving?' in December 2005.
Over the intervening year between their first meeting with Epps and recording 'How's My Driving?', the band played as many gigs as possible, including an entirely self financed UK tour which saw them sleeping with their equipment in a Volvo 240 on occasions! The band secured an endorsement with Sebor, the largest absinth company in the country, at about this time, thanks to the absinth tribute song 'Solution'. The EP was launched in March 2006, at a sold out gig at the Met Bar venue in Leeds. This gig was part of The Attic Project's prize for winning the Leeds Bright Young Things competition, a contest run by Leeds City Council to find the best new bands in the Leeds area. Winners also recieved free recording time, and a re- record of the song 'Anything You Want' (a favourite from the days of Attic), produced by Bruce Wood of Nightmares On Wax fame, found its way on to 'How's My Driving?' alongside the Stuart Epps produced material.
So what's happening with TAP at the moment? Well, they've not been able to do as many gigs as they would have liked recently due to three members being final year uni students, but with that out of the way the band is free to concentrate on preparing for Badfest, the three day classic punk and ska festival organised by Buster Bloodvessel and his Bad Manners crew. Sales of the 'How's My Driving?' EP are going well, and another tour may yet be in the offing for late 2006... All that can be said is "Watch This Space!!"
