People who present themselves as “artists†often come across as highly serious, brooding individuals. In other words, many of them are quite full of themselves. One of our contributors and I recently attended an “arts event†in our community. We were both rather impressed by many of the serious artists and noticed that the majority of them did not possess even a rudimentary sense of humor. My counterpart light-heartedly posed these questions to one such individual (concerning the merits of photorealism). “Why not just take a picture? Wouldn’t you save a helluva lot of dough on supplies?†The person was visibly agitated by the inquiry and we were henceforth “out of the clubâ€. My friend also made a silly remark about an aritist’s somewhat opulent choice for a painting title. It was called “Serenity Amidst the Dulcet Siren Songâ€. He said, “I’d rather call it “Carmine entranced by ethereal bassâ€, and began laughing uncontrollably. We then hastily exited the gallery. My final observation is that “fine art†and humor do not mix well. It’s too bad really, the gallery served a tasty selection of pepperoni and a sublime box o’ wine
