*IN THE STUDIO*
Over the last year or so we having been gigging quite a lot, so much that we have run out of funds. So we've decided to cut down on the gigging and get back into the studio to record a few new songs.
over the summer were gonna stick to playing local gigs and come back with a few more tracks for you. Our next gig is in Durham at the FuturePerfect Festival and then after that were back in Darlington playing in Seen with Proud Scout, so we look foward to that. Hopefully we will play the forum again soon so we can come back and visit all those people at Newblood, but we shall see.
Our first release, available now at any of our gigs
Biography
We are Grand Guignol, also known as Grand Guggynol and Grand Gigolo.
As used today, the term 'Grand Guignol' (pronounced Grahn Geen-yol') refers to any dramatic entertainment that deals with macabre subject matter and features “over-the-top†graphic violence. It is derived from Le Theatre du Grand Guignol, the name of the Parisian theatre that horrified audiences for over sixty years.
The Theatre du Grand-Guignol--which means literally the "big puppet show"--took its name from the popular French puppet character Guignol, whose original incarnation was as an outspoken social commentator--a spokesperson for the canuts, or silk workers, of Lyon. Early Guignol puppet shows were frequently censored by Napoleon III's police force.
Oscar Metenier was himself a frequent target of censorship for having the audacity to depict a milieu which had never before appeared on stage--that of vagrants, street kids, prostitutes, criminals, and "apaches," as street loafers and con artists were called at the time--and moreover for allowing those characters to express themselves in their own language.*
Unsurprisingly, we thought this a very fitting name for a modern band.
Musically, I'd like to drop the old cliche that you can't categorise us, but since any band who say that are generally boring as fuck anyway feel free to drop us in whatever pigeonhole you want - it's rock music so it shouldn't be too hard, we wear our influences on our sleeves.
From the band's embryonic state, a time during which we have been beset by all manner of small tragedies ranging from broken basses to broken bones, the band got their first gig underway just after christmas supporting our freinds We Start Fires at their Club Strut night in Darlington, and now satisfied we can cut it live, are currently in the process of writing more material, rehearsing our live act and also recording some of our current songs.
