Early in 2004, DJ stoic (aka Maurice Rizzo) started hanging out with his cousin, tommy switch and a grade school friend, john Buddha. Sick of Norman, OK and the college music/club scene stoic began coming to Oklahoma city every weekend to hang with his friends in the city. whereupon, he found dj Buddha turntables.
After watching switch and Buddha mix on the weekends Stoic began to delve into the turntables and mixer. They told me they would not teach me because "you have to figure it out on you, thats what we did." Weekend after weekend stoic would come and practice on buddha's decks and play his records. Soon after this he met Mikey "Payload" Hudson, Mike"Stinky P" Patton, and Eric "Krisp-e" Olsen. Through the aforementioned, stoic's connections into the OKC scene were forged.
Switch, Stinky P, and mikey payload formed the crew H.B.O. (Home Boys Only) two years prior. Shortly after, bringing John Buddha into the crew. The HBO crew was know for Switch's in-your-face drum and bass selection, Stinky P for his breaks and turntablism, Payload for his mastery of the mix, and Buddha as a pure DnB party rocker. Stoic learned everything he could from these 4 heavy hitters in the OKC scene.
Once himself, Switch, and Buddha got their own apartment in October 2004, he had the tools of the trade at his fingertips 24/7. In this time he began to buy the drum and bass he wanted to play, was given the name stoic and eventually played out for the first time at the showroom, an after hour club in Oklahoma city. The name stoic was given by his friends Sophia and Mikey in reference to his steadfast demeanor behind the decks, and in general.
In the following years his crew became a mainstay of the OKC music scene, playing countless one-offs and having residencies at some of the nightspots around the city. Late in 2006, Buddha and Stoic began Elementary Tuesday at blur lounge. Elementary is the only drum and bass weekly in Oklahoma city. Elementary is about exposing new and seasoned talent to the nightclub masses of OKC and offering an alternative to the norm. School has been in session for nearly a year now and will continue as long as the OKC crew keeps supporting. With production on the horizon for DJ Stoic, the future is full of opertunity. Get ready for big things OKC.
Even though the musical flavor of the members of HBO may change from time to time, two things remain constant, the tightness of the friendships and the utmost respect for one another.
