The Soccer Mom of Small Business
Whether you're a kid or a parent, we've all heard of the minivan (a.k.a. - M.U.V. - Mom Utility Vehicle) driving moms toting the little critters to and from their games, or really, just about anywhere else. You've either had one, had a friend with one, or are one! These troopers are more widely known as "Soccer Moms"!
Soccer Moms are essential in getting everyone where they need to be safely and efficiently. They're strong, tireless, and reliable. As a business woman, and a mother, I've played this role from several directions.
I haven't much experience with MySpace, until now as I open and create my account. I've heard all the media attention to it, I know the general demographic is very young. Yes, as I poke around the profiles, I do see that there are people of all ages, social, and professional circles. However, I believe if I could figure out where the stats were on the age of the average MySpace user, I'd imagine it would be between 14-25.
So, what brings me here? Well, generally speaking, the 14-25 year old demographic. Although I know that the primary personal interests in that demographic are likely sex, shopping, music, and entertainment; not necessarily in that order, but it's probably fairly accurate.
I also realize that youngsters in that age range are interested in MONEY. Not so much because they're greedy or their thirst for power, but because they're beginning to understand the power that money has over their freedom and independence. Money allows them the material things that provide freedom to enjoy the world outside their home, away from parents and siblings. It provides them with the material things that they can enjoy with their friends.
Without being overly philosophical about the power of money and the use of that power, and whether it will be used for good or evil; these things should be left up to your own morals and standards.
So, I still really haven't told you what I'm doing here, huh? Well, as people young and old grow, they seek change. Some look for changes and direction in their career choices and even consider working for themselves in their own business, but they're just not sure what to do, or where to go, how to start, how to sift through all the nonsense that's .. now, what's legitimate, what's a scam, etc.... Here's where Ask Jenny comes in!
With over 25 years in the small business and retail industry, both .. and off, I hope I have enough experience to be able to share and guide all who ask. Having opened my own retail business in 1997 in San Diego, we also started, built, and maintain our own websites and marketing efforts. Our retail store and store website can be seen at www.TheZenMerchant.com. From there, you can see several of our other .. endeavors.
I started this MySpace account also to be able to sort of let my hair down a bit. You see, I've already created a Small Business Resource website and directory where we have a blog, and small business software, and ebooks, and other resources. But, the demographic there is a bit more reserved and the expectations there a bit more formal. Here at MySpace, I get the sense of being able to be a lot more casual. I could probably even curse if I wanted to! I don't think I will, but I take some comfort in knowing that I could if the mood struck. ;) I think I'll use this MySpace account to speak a bit more frankly to the mass of folks who seek an honest opinion and some direction in where to invest their time and efforts if they care to venture into the world of independent small business ownership.
So, I'd like to invite our MySpace community to Ask Jenny any small business related question you want. I may or may not have all the best answers, but I promise to have an answer, and to be as helpful as I possibly can.
With so many opportunities out there in the pages of your local newspaper classifieds, to the back pages of magazines, to all the Internet "work at home and make a million bucks by tomorrow in your sleep..." scams. As "The Soccer Mom of Small Business", I'll check them out and let you know what I think. All you need to do is: Ask Jenny
