words DROP was started by Michael L. Williams and Drew Simenson, graduates of Providence's Rhode Island School of Design in the fields of Film/Animation and Illustration, respectively.
Our first project was a music video released in 2005 entitled "I'ma SHOOT it," inspired by popular gangsta rap, depicting us riding through our hood and looking "gritty" to a hardcore gangsta beat with highly controversial lyrics. Michael Williams became "Gangstas of New York," and Drew Simenson was now "Murdawk."
After the local success of the video, we began making collaborative music out of Williams' "MickeyDC'sHitsLab" and Simenson's "CrimeLab" studios. We both had experience and training with many different musical instruments including piano, synthesizer, electric and acoustic guitar, bass, african drum, saxophone, human beatboxing... the list goes on. Our process became focused on composing all of these elements into songs that we liked with lyrics that explored social issues that we faced every day.
This music culminated in the 2005 release of The Idea of Gangsta, the first full-length album from words DROP. It was an underground album that featured raw sounds and highly explicit lyrics, including the already-popular "I'ma SHOOT it."
The excitement surrounding words DROP quickly spread to include the involvement of other artists such as Wax Lyrics Andre, Doctor Hydroponicus, King Motif, MARS and Lil' Kingz.
In 2006, we decided to form our own record label entitled Stroke of Genius Entertainment. The first release was words DROP's hit single, "Ice Cream Man" featuring Zoe Dalis.
After the initial success of this single, we got an exciting new artist named TV on board for the production of a free local Christmas 2006 EP entitled "Lil' Drummer Boy." TV is 14 years old with advanced rapping skill and training as a drummer.
The new album, FREEDOM, which we have just received and is available at New England's Newbury Comics, among other retail vendors, is our first release in 2007, and features TV, Zoe Dalis, lyrics by King Motif, a cameo by new artist MARS, vocals by Lil' Kingz, and the introduction of the newest member of words DROP, Andrew Smilansky A.K.A. "DocSpoc."
