The Harlow and Epping Star in the UK."Adhering to the tenet that less is more, Matt Bulthouse crafts songs of gentle, harmonic simplicity that nestle up against the soul with the warm familiarity of old friends. The solo singer/guitarist sits comfortably within a US folk tradition that embraces the mournful wide prairies evoked by Neil Young, the lonesome intimacy of Mickey Newbury’s tales of despair on the rusting rails of the hinterland and the uncomplicated laments of Kelly Joe Phelps.Bulthouse’s mellow vocals find the most complimentary companion in his lightness of touch with the strings and together he and his guitar weave a quiet, lyrical whole perfectly in keeping with his material, from the weary voice of experience picking with hesitant resignation through When It’s Time To Go and the soaring anthemic harmonies of Broken to the more upbeat, gently punny Wasted On You."Paul NewmanDeputy EditorHarlow and Epping Star******************************************From Producer Mitch Wood:What can I say about Matt that's already been said...He's got a great voice....He's a great songwriter...I laughed, I cried, I bought the t-shirt...And while these things are true, Matt is more than just that singer/songwriter guy...The Matt you fans are going to want to know is actually very quite and reserved (the first time I met him I was convinced he was a deaf mute). But through his stammering we finally discovered that we had something in common other than the day jobs that we hated. It was Music, of course. Over the past 5 years I've seen this guy grow in many ways. His songwriting is nostalgically poignant..His voice, refreshingly reminiscent, his style purely his own. When he got me involved in this project I knew going in what recording an album would end up doing to him, and I tried to warn him....But to my delight he chose to do it anyway...I'm glad he picked me to produce, and more over, I'm glad he picked me for a friend...He's a guy you will want to know, but once you listen to him you'll realize he's a guy you already know...and have missed for a long time.very corduroy,
Mitch Wood
