HOW IT ALL BEGAN…
The musical journey started for Rhymes from a young age……
“I began listening to jungle when I was around the age of 12, 13 after hearing tunes such as ‘Incredible’ by General Levy, Big Bad and Heavy and other big classics by producers such as Roni Size. The older kids on the school bus, gave the driver old rave tapes to play on the way to school and on the way back home. You didn’t have a choice in listening to them, whether you liked them or not. I liked it and was intrigued by dj’s and mcs on the tapes so I decided to check them out myself. After going to my first rave I was hooked and regularly went raving where I used to listen in admiration of the MC's and DJ's who used to mash up the place. I began mc-ing when I was around 15 after listening to some of the innovators of the jungle scene such as General Levy, Stevie Hyper D and also MC's like GQ, Bassman, Skibadee, Fearless and others. I wanted to be a part of that so I became inspired to write my own lyrics and never categorised myself to MC to just one genre of music.
During 1999 I was invited on a local pirate radio station, Trilogy Fm. This gave me the encouragement and motivation to write more lyrics. I used to feature on both garage and drum and bass shows and recorded all my sets on cassette. I remember listening to the tapes and practicing new lyrics for next week’s show. Before long, my show on Sunday evenings had two phones going mad with texts and calls. This gave me the initial exposure I needed and a small following of listeners began to grow.
That same year, I gave one of my radio recordings to an under 18’s event promoter (Aaron) who ran both garage and drum and bass events. I got a call from him around a week later asking if I would like to be one of his resident MC’s. He was impressed with the fact that I could run both a Drum and Bass and Garage set. After a couple of years playing at under 18 events at venues such as Bagleys and Camden Palace, I focused my energy on progressing in the Drum and Bass scene.
A few years later in the summer of 2004, after putting together many demo tapes and CDs, DJ Fluid of Turbo Promotions invited me to become a New Nation resident MC playing at New Nation weekly in Woking. This then led to second room appearances at One Nation and other major events across London and the UK. This gave me a foot in door as my name was now on 1000’s of flyers across the country.
I began to build my profile and gave a bag full of demo CD’s to promoters, ravers and other DJ’s and MC’s at every event I went to. Slowly but surely, the phone began to ring and interest from promoters began to grow. I was now doing warm up sets at big events and just networking and getting my name about.
During 2005, bookings began to come in more frequently as I had slowly built a following from radio, raves and demo CD’s. This was the first sign of the hard work paying off, but I had to maintain this and keep on working. Summer 2005 saw my One Nation main arena debut at Brixton Academy. The place was absolutely packed and I came on over DJ Hype and Bryan Gee. Towards the end of 2005 I was now playing out regularly, trying to get sets at as many events as possible as well as pirate and internet radio. I and DJ Tomi Kain also had our own show on the award winning Pyrotechnicradio.com showcasing fresh talent. Things were looking bright….
At the beginning of 2006 I was invited on Kool Fm. I was delighted to be part of an establishment that has seen a lot of talent pass through and grow to well established artists such as Brockie, Det, Skibadee and many others. I relished this opportunity to step up my game and further myself.
During 2006 I have been playing out every week all over the UK and abroad in countries such as Germany and the Netherlands. I featured in Knowledge Magazine as MC of the month for January. I am also working in the studio on both Drum and Bass and Hip Hop tracks and studio mixes with various artists. I am currently maintaining my hard work and am aiming for the top spot so
