Peng Zhan and Yongchun Li became good friends because they are both metal fans. They are enthusiasm for death metal for which is composed brutally and maneatingly, for it’s heavy tone color and it’s unholy thoughts.
In Aug. 1999, while the first unholy note was played, the band Purgatory were established at the workshop under the building in where Yongchun Li lives. There was only two person in the band then: Yongchun Li, the bass and vocal, and Peng Zhan, the guitar. After tried some guys, a man named Haitao Huang joined them as drum. They record their first song, cognominal, PURGATORY with their good friend Shuo Tang. Mr. Huang left band soon. In Oct the same year, Shuo Tang introduce his schoolfellow in college to join the band. That guy is Serapis. Peng Zhan composed a huge number of songs when the band lost their rehearsal room for Serapis’s vocal.
They found a new rehearsal place in 2000, at a suburban fishery village. But Yongchun Li left band for some personal reasons at that time. Meanwhile, Yongquan Li, his brother, joint for another guitar. Jianfei Yang, Yongchun Li’s partner in another band joint Purgatory as drum too. Then the band began it’s fierce journey for music.
After one year’s practice, with a friend’s help, they recorded a demo in a shanty and posted it to Beijing. Soon after that, the Chinese metal music combine album RESURRECTION OF THE GODS-1 released, which embodied one of the Purgatory’s works in demo- THE GIFT FROM SATAN. This song is praised by audiences. In 2002, the band release it’s first album DREAM OF MORIBUND in MORT Pro.
In Jan. 2004, Jun Wang joint the band to fill the blank place of bass. Which keeping blank since Yongchun Li left. After four years later, the band has reformed integrality again. Then they began to work for the new album POWER OF EVILLY. Despite of so many accidents, the recording runs not so smoothly, but they finished it at last in 2007.
