Emotionally playful, moodily uplifting, Voodoo & Valentine navigate a wide range tones and textures with grace and humor. Voodoo & Valentine are currently Matthew Muñiz (piano, songwriting), Julia (vocals), and Chris Kladis (drums). Combining nuances from a great many influences, Voodoo & Valentine aim to create a new genre of pop: somewhere between the intimacy of the singer-songwriter and the energy of a full band. One listener described Voodoo & Valentine as enjoyably abstract, addressing important issues without feeling overwhelming or heavy. Another, Voodoo & Valentine goes against the mainstream by connecting to their audience with a smile by engrossing their listeners with their heartfelt tones, and with the strength of their friendship.
Voodoo & Valentine are currently putting together their debut album and are establishing a name for themselves in shows. On stage, Voodoo & Valentine have a magnetic stage presence: they bring an audience into their music with thoughtful lyrics, flowing melodies, and dynamic, shifting rhythms. Voodoo & Valentines performances are both personal and lively, their camaraderie evident in their bearings.
The band was born out of Matthew and Julias high school friendship. In the beginning, they played original songs for friends and family, not thinking to start a band for many years. Matthew eventually went to college to study music composition. Using his training, he immersed himself in more and more styles of music, picking through each genre for influences and concepts. The duo went through numerous stylistic periods, exploring each new musical category, taking what worked, and molding it all into their own signature sound.
In 2005 the pair met Chris Kladis, a drummer with a rock background whose striking musical instinct and adaptable style complemented Matthew and Julias multi-faceted sound. From there, the bands identity began to expand. With the many dynamic possibilities afforded by his percussion, Voodoo & Valentine came into its own.
Now the three continue to refine their craft with humor, passion, and grace. As they continue to play and grow, they look forward to connecting to more audiences and making new music.
