Memlah

About Me

Regarding the „Memlah“band, one can say that its music is multilayered and best described as an amalgamation of a variety of genres - drum'n'bass, dub, ambiental, nu jazz, world music - or it could be labelled as a psychodelic band which follows the pattern of esthetics of dance electronic music and performs in almost classical rock line up - drums, bass, guitar, keyboard and trumpet. Memlah’s music is modern - it comprises elements of genres that have emerged on the global music scene in recent years - and simultaneously delivers the sound of analog instruments and echoes the dub present for decades. Repetitiveness, i.e. excessive(multiple) theme repetition, is the quality of this band. Thus, the themes can help the listener to learn the essence of the band’s music and therefore connect with it on the first listening. The repetitiveness also makes possible for their music to overwhelm the careful listeners and to clearly define the atmosphere in which the listener can easily find himself at ease. One cannot only dance to their music, but ponder and relax as well. Memlah first performed live in 2001. Band members are Aleksandar Martinov - guitar, Milos Kralj - bass, Aleksandar Stevcic - keyboard, Damir Bacikin - trumpet and Darko Kurjak (PARTIBREJKERS) - drums. They are all musicians with years of experience in local bands. In the summer of 2005 they recorded their self-titled debut album in FAT FACTORY studio in Zrenjanin. Behind about 48 minutes of instrumental music there are 8 tracks: Oro, Supernova, Memlah, Srbijah, Paranoia, Dubog, Joe The Spring and Discount. The Album is produced by Atila Djember and recorded by Atila Djember and Srdjan Muc(Blank Disc) Above mentioned styles and genres interlace in what appear to be very different and yet distinctive songs.Author of all songs is Aleksandar Martinov a.k.a. MARTIN MEMLAH, who is a well known author of electronic music. Memlah would like to single out some of their important performances, such as at REFRACT 2002 and 2006 festivals in Belgrade, EXIT 04 and JAZZ FEST in Zelenkovac (Serb Republic). They have had more than 50 concerts so far throughout Vojvodina. Sometimes, when it’s technically possible, they perform with Nenad Popov who’s a video artist.Jazz, rock, dub and reggae audience think highly of them as well as local techno/house DJs. Dub from Jamaican sound systems, a gentle spring breeze caressing your eyes, transiency of time, distant sirens from the ships disappearing on the horizon, sound of five instruments floating in space - all that and a whole lot more can be heard on Memlah’s album
