What happens when half of the Ike Turner band get together to let their ya-yas out? The result is a smoldering display of seamless musicianship that transcends all boundaries.

It all started in Spring of 2004 when drummer Bill Ray met one Ryan Montana at a CD release party where both were playing. Ryan's stellar saxophone work enticed BR to invite Ryan to Ike's house, as Mr. Turner was looking for a new alto player. At the ensuing rehearsal, seemingly long-lost brotherhood was established and this circle of creatives was finally complete.
Ryan invited the lot of the gang over to his place of employment at the time, SOTA Music in Del Mar, Ca. All instruments were there and ready to go, and what started as a quick tour turned into a 3 hr. jam session, of which you hear snippets of the results playing right now.**note-Christian Karriger played guitar on "Dr.Dank"**

In the Summer of 2004 between tours with the Father of Rock & Roll, Bill procured a weekly gig at the soon-to-be famous Nautical Bean Coffee Company located in a picturesque setting at the harbor in Oceanside, Ca. The goal was simple- come to the gig with no ideas in your head, no preconceptions of what would transpire. No predetermined arrangements of classic songs; a blank slate if you will. Throughout the 8 or so weeks of doing this, everything was being recorded by one David Henk, sound engineer extrordinare.

The music you hear is extemporaneous in nature, crossing genres from Hip-Hop to Latin, making a wide left turn into the depths of Funkiness and then back around to Jazz Fusion. All the while, the band seems to think with a single brain, fueled by loads of great coffee from "The Bean".

There are two tracks on this CD, each tune shifting through different movements; in an effort to preserve the continuity of each composition, the tracks are available through compact disc only. Breaking up the tune into different tracks would be akin to putting cheap ketchup onto a fine steak. Not to worry...each slice of improvisation equates to almost a full hour of mindblowing musical "satori".

The band itself consists of well-traveled and subsequently world-class players- The guitar wizardry and rap lyrics are provided by one Seth Blumberg, keys and tenor saxophone is handled by "Generalissimo" Leo Dombecki, alto saxmaster Ryan Montana is present, burning holes in your soul, bassist Kevin Cooper puts a whoopin' on the funkiness in the place to be, and drummer Bill Ray keeps, as he puts it, "The lines in the musical coloring book thick and easy to scribble within".

Since there is so much of this material on hand, it is currently being combed through and only the best niblets are being thrown on the grill for your musical appetite. Remember, "It's a beautiful day to be alive".

Cirque du Soul peripheral projects

The following selections represent other projects this unique core of musicians have contributed to.

Ike Turner
Rising With The Blues **GRAMMY NOMINATED**

On Risin' with the Blues, the R&B icon and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer takes the intensity level up a notch or two with typically slashing-stinging guitar work, rollicking boogie woogie piano flourishes and some of the nastiest, rawest, most potent vocals hes ever summoned up in a fabled career that dates back more than 50 years.

Ryan Montana & the 10 O'clock Scholars
"Electric Picture Show"

The Cirque shows it's more organized side on this release. Ryan, Kevin, Seth, Leo & Bill recorded this in early 2006 at SOTA Music in Del Mar, Ca. with one Todd Gunnerson at the mixing board. The resulting release is one of a very 70's flavor. Recorded with analog (read: REAL) instruments from Hammond Organ, Clavinet, Rhodes Piano, all the way down to a Scotchtape dispenser, it's sonically very pure and honest.

Mr. DSP
Armchair Intelligensia/Dancefloor Superheroes

"Who is MR. DSP?" is an oft-asked question. Whomever he is, he sure lays down some funky stuff. Leo and Seth created this little gem and the result is a plethora of electronic mayhem that is both musical and innovative. Kevin also shows up for some waycool bass lines, as well as Jesse playing drums. Even for those who have no experience with the genre of Electronica, this is the perfect introduction to the sound.

Jamie Varley
You Ride

SOTA Music artist Jamie Varley (the FryDay Band) broke loose and recorded this gem of a release. Seth and Bill play on it. It's rock in the vein of Counting Crows/ U2 vibe. This is a GREAT album and deserves a place here on the Cirque du Soul page.
