Mista Montana's History
Mista Montana began his radio passion at an early age, recording TDK 90 tapes for his primary school class with charachters such as Richard Booty and Agadapoose playing an integral role in his recorded broadcasts.
He went from this to mixtapes in early secondary school, experimenting with other forms of music as well as hip hop. His seminal 'Halloween Hardcore' rave tape, that he pressed up and distributed hand to hand with the help of his school mates, sold not only throughout his school but also became a street tape, circulating the towns of South Yorkshire, with dance shops such as Arcadia buying copies in bulk. Even his teachers bought copies for their children!
After realising that the reason why people took such an interest in his mini-recordings was that it was all unique content that they wouldn't' find anywhere else, Montana, at 14 years old, took his ambitions to the airwaves and set up Underground FM 105.2. Albeit a very low powered and relatively jokey station, Montana managed to learn some of the vital dos and don'ts of broadcasting and in late 1994 acquired a position at one of the biggest pirate radio stations in Nottinghamshire, Energy Rush 105.3 FM.
After this stations closure, Montana went on to tour the pirate radio stations of Notts and Sheffield, performing his shows on many of the most listened to stations of the time, whilst still making recorded radio shows for his school and local area.
In late 1999, he was offered a 6 hour slot on Sheffield Freedom FM 106.5 and that's where he started to carve out a niche audience, interviewing local talent and breaking new music from the states and UK. Run from the seedy back room of a brothel and drug dealer's flat in Norfolk Park, Sheffield, this station proved Montana's defiant determination to broadcast no matter the circumstances and after this station's drug-bust and subsequent closure in 2000. Montana marked the millennium with the groundworks for what would become his biggest 'recording' yet, Conspiracy Worldwide Radio.
His radio shows are now podcasted on many hip hop media sites and since 2006, Mista Montana has risen from local pirate radio DJ to world-renown radio host and company CEO of Conspiracy Worldwide Radio.
In addition to his work as radio station CEO and host, Mista Montana is also a producer and recording artist, with a series of mixtapes and albums due in 2008.
His time is also spent networking and liaising with recording artists in the US and in his home country to arrange promotions,interviews, magazine features and live shows in the UK.
Never one to shy away from controversy, Montana's presenting and style and inability to bite his tongue has seen him have many confrontations with legal and government agencies as well as some people within the recording music industry. But as he says himself , "you sometimes have to be the catalyst in the life or else it all gets samey".
