BIO: Dimitris Papamichael was born in 1934, in Piraeus, Greece. He studied acting at the Drama School of the National Greek Theater, where he made his stage debut in 1955 in Euripides' "Hecuba" and interpreted several important roles during 1955-1960: Treplev in Chekhov's "The Seagull", Jimmy Porter in John Osborne's "Look Back in Anger" etc. He then collaborated with the prestigious Theatro Technis (Art Theater) and created a personal group with his then wife, Aliki Vougiouklaki: between 1964 and 1974 they appeared together in several plays (including George Bernard Shaw's "My Fair Lady") and starred in some of the most commercially succesful films in the history of greek cinema (their on screen partnership had started in 1959 and their marriage - in 1965 - was received with much enthusiasm from their fans). After their divorce (1974) Papamichael retired from films and concetrated on theater;he was much praised for his excellent work in Shakespeare's "Macbeth" (title role) and Euripides' "Medea" (as Jason) Dimitri Papamichael died on the 8th of August 2004 in Porto Hydra, Peleponnese, Greece from heart failure. He will always be remembered as a great actor in the golden era of Greek Cinema and Theatre.NEVER ON SUNDAY `` POTE TIN KYRIAKI (1960)
Dimitri Papamichael had a special appearance in the film Never On Sunday where he filmed a scene together with Melina Mercouri. The scene he shot with Melina (he played the sailor who was going to be with a woman for the first time) has it's own place in the history of World Cinema. The picture where she lights his cigarette became a poster, a record album cover, a postcard and a magazine cover across the world from the US to Japan. "It was a very special moment for me", he once said.
