My Life Story...
Sharon L. Carpenter is a broadcast journalist who is not afraid of a cutting-edge story and her impressive body of work and solid reputation prove it. Originally from London, England, Sharon relocated to New York to attend college and ended up making the United States her permanent home.
Currently, Sharon is an on-air correspondent and producer for BET NEWS. There she reports the daily news briefs for the network and reports/produces in-depth enterprise stories for BET’s hard-hitting news specials and the network’s talk show MEET THE FAITH.
During her time as a journalist the BET News correspondent’s fearlessness and constant pursuit of interesting story angles has helped to build her solid reputation in the television news industry. Her impressive list of interviewees ranges from former New York Governor Pataki to rapper 50 Cent to Hollywood actor Johnny Depp.
At BET News, Sharon has been integral in producing high-profile and progressive news stories for the network. Just recently she secured an exclusive interview with hip-hop icon Lil’ Kim just moments after the rapper was released from jail after her conviction on perjury charges. Though there were numerous national media outlets covering the event, Kim spoke only to Ms. Carpenter.
After 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, Sharon did extensive coverage for S.O.S (SAVING OURSELVES): THE BET RELIEF TELETHON which raised millions of dollars for the victims. This included travel to Mississippi with rapper David Banner to visit the devastated areas.
Never afraid of presenting a new cultural voice, Sharon introduced Grime music from the UK - an edgy new descendant of gangster rap, dance music and dancehall reggae, to BET in an innovative news story for THE CHOP UP - a newsmagazine show for the younger generation.
Previously, Sharon was a reporter for CBS MarketWatch where she covered business stories and trends in popular culture. While working for the top-rated financial news show she conducted an interview with R&B star Usher that he called his “most challenging interview†to that date. The statement was obviously a compliment since, a short time later, the singer specifically requested Sharon Carpenter to prepare him for an interview with Forbes Magazine.
Ms. Carpenter’s broadcast experience extends behind the camera with writing and producing hard news and entertainment reports for BET Nightly News/CBS News. She has also served as field producer on news stories for UPN 9 News - WWOR-TV’s award-winning New York newscast.
