NEW ORLEANS
A poem by NOLA native Chuck Perkins
If your American dream is painted on a canvas
Neatly folded in the corner of Andy Warhol’s mind
New Orleans is a hurricane beating down your coast
If you close your eyes
And feel the easy ride
Of the St. Charles Street Car
Where a solo tuba
Blows the scent of magnolia
Down narrow streets
and everyone plays possum with the heat
and no one’s too big or too small
to paint their tongue with a snowball
where former slaves pay homage to the first Americans
by masking in suits of rhine stones and bright colored feathers
that transform security guards into Indian Chiefs
doing rain dances on Congo Square
where the drums drum
and the wine drink
and the big chief sing
somebody give me a quarter
cause pretty big chief want some water
if you can envision the souls of yesterday
living in the music
that rises from the cracks in the sidewalks
New Orleans is your dream
With a heart as soft
As the spanish moss
Dripping from centuries old oak tress
She’s a pretty face with dirty feet
The good witch of lake Ponchartrain
The spice god of shrimp and crawfish
Keeping the spirits fed
Communities of windowless monuments
Masquerading as cemeteries
Tower above ground
No earth or worms to cover the flesh
No silver bullets to turn out the spirits
That still dance with her
Spin your umbrella
And wave your bandanna
It’s Mardi Gras time
And everybody’s happy
Armed with a blue print of civilization
The new world stormed in
With enough asphalt and cement
To pave a boulevard back to Paris
the spirit of the swamp still hasn’t submitted
Leaving mildewed kisses of disapproval
On every thing foreign to the wet lands
Catholicism could not turn out the spirit of Marie Laveau
The wrecking ball could not turn out the spirit of Storyville
And death could not turn out the spirit of Louie Armstrong
When yesterday hangs on to forever
Tradition is a temple.

I think most people either really like me, love me or can't stand the sight of me. I don't seem to cultivate a feeling of indifference in folks. While my Mother thinks I am most awesome (and will tell you that if you stand near her for any length of time) I'd consider myself pretty average. I mean, I haven't written anything you've read or seen. I've not directed or produced anything (including children). I don't make important speeches at gatherings of either the important or not-so-important. I don't paint, sculpt, weld, sing (unless I'm nicely toasted in a certain Bourbon Street karaoke bar and it's not Cat's Meow), dance (I CAN dance - I've just never been paid to do so). I don't fly aircraft or sail boats. I don't design clothes, shoes or handbags. I don't take professional grade photos or videos (although I'm constantly snapping away at the great and mundane moments in my life). I'm not a whiz with money so Wall Street would not be impressed, I'm sure. I don't put money away for the future (not much anyway) because who knows if I decide to stick that $600 into my IRA to spend when I'm 80 instead of going to Europe when I'm 43 (example only) that I'll even be around to tap into said IRA when I'm 80. Maybe I'll be dead AND have never gone to Europe. Think about it. Call me irresponsible, I don't really give a flip. If I have to live in a fridge box when I'm old because I went on adventures instead of seeing a solid financial planner, well...my bad. I'm a basically happy person. Of course striking it rich would be fab but other than that all is well. I have a great family, sweet husband, fabulous friends, shmooshy dogs, comfy house, and fun neighbors. I make it a point to have a good time wherever I go - no matter what - and to try to make sure everyone else is, too. I'm a bit of a people pleaser, but I can't make you happy so gits happy ya own sef. I'm a Cancer through & through. I was born in Newport Beach, CA @ Hoag Memorial. I'm 1/8th Potawatomi Indian, my paternal great-grandmother was full-blooded. I once ran across a book at a US Parks Service shop in Union Station/St. Louis that featured a pic from the late 1800's of three young Potawatomi women and I looked just like them. Moreso in fact than I look like anyone in my family. I've never been able to find that book again. :( I'm the youngest of 7. I have 2 sisters & 4 brothers, something like 27 neices & nephews and (I think) 11 great neices & nephews. I once had a Harley (1992 883 Sportster bored out to a 1200) and had many adventures with my friends in the Ozark Mountain H.O.G. Chapter where I was Secretary, Treasurer, LOH Officer and Newsletter Editor. My favorite place in the UNIVERSE (and the city in which I plan to end my days...someday) is New Orleans, Louisiana. It never ceases to amaze me with how incredibly cool, gritty, real, soulful, decadent, elegant, inspirational and beautiful it is. Even now, after Katrina - it shines in a way no place else on earth ever has or ever will. Go see for yourself, you'll never be the same...... WHO DAT?!?!?

My Interests

The paranormal, reading, digital photography and editing, music (the blues), pilates/yoga, very-very-very dirty martinis (yum), travel, rat terriers, X-BOX (love it), floriculture, wine (mostly red), the beach, vanilla cigars, cooking - although Brian does most (okay, ALL) of that, getting together with friends, love to dance, love dogs (not s'much cats - sorry), the color red, sushi is SO good - so are crawfish, Harley's rock, NEW ORLEANS, the Saints, Mardi Gras memorabilia (you can't beat me on Ebay), oh, E-bay, linen postcards of NOLA from the 20's & 30's, can I stop now?

THAT'S RIGHT - MY DOG CAN KICK YOUR DOGS' ASS!

I'd like to meet:

This pic is my Grandma McCord (center) and her cousins, c. 1904.

Hmmm, actually, lots of folks - Anne Rice, Hugh Jackman, the guy who worked for the typewriter company who invented the process that created carbon paper (microencapsulization - or something like that) which ultimately was used for 'scratch & sniff', Ad Hermens - a guy in the Netherlands who, along with his sister & mother, saved my Dad from a bombed out German Red Cross train during WWII, gosh... how about Buddha, and Will Ferrell/Robin Williams - I think they'd make me feel sane, Patton because he was badass, can't forget my A Number 1 - JOHN WAYNE!!! Reminds me of my Dad - seriously, it's weird.... Harrison Ford. I would love to hang out with Chelsea Handler because she's such a cynical, sarcastic, smartass. Kat Von D because she's beautiful, sensitive, smart, strong, and loves her familia to death. Helen Mirren. Tommy Lee Jones. John Cusack. Joan Cusack. Sandra Bullock. Adam Sandler. Snoop Dogg. LL Cool J. Ashley Judd. Clint Eastwood. Josephine Baker. God. AND last - but not least - me when I was 3. Everyone says I was a 'hoot' so what the heck! I'd pretty much like to meet anyone interesting and fun, bearing in mind that I'm here for 'friends' only (not romance) because I'm very much married. :) Please don't send me a friend request if you don't have a profile pic or if you've set your profile to PRIVATE because I won't approve it (unless you send me a message and/or I already know you, yada, yada, yada). Sorry.

Music:

Everything from classical to triphop. Locally, TUF, Dwight Frizzell and anyone he plays with (I can't comfortably call him Rev. cuz' he was my next-door neighbor for 10 yrs and so...he's just Dwight), The Tripods AND Terry Gann, The Wilders, Allied Saints, Mickey Finn, Ida Macbeth, Mama Ray @ Harlings is the best, Nace Brothers, lots more I can't think of right now. I've never really been able to wrap my head around 'New Country'. Love the old stuff - Marty Robbins, Mr. Cash, Chet Atkins. Love LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Luda, Snoop. LOVE FOO FIGHTERS & INCUBUS!!! LOVE MUTE MATH!!! Sade, Dwight Yoakam, Alice Cooper, Dave Grohl, Nine Inch Nails, Alison Krauss, KISS, Tom Petty, Split Enz, U2, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Pogues, Pink Floyd, Better Than Ezra, Led Zeppelin, Dido, Mary Black, Catie Curtis, The Corrs, Squeeze, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Headpins, Morissey, The Fixx, John Waite (in and out of The Babys), Prodigy, The Boomtown Rats, Def Leppard, Rob Zombie, Harry Connick Jr., MotorHead, Paula Cole, Ozzy (whom I've met and he really was a lovely person in the late 80's), Everything But The Girl, Taj Mahal, John Mayall & The Blues Breakers, Paul Oakenfold, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Uppity Blues Women, The Radiators, Grayson Capps, Keb Mo, The Church, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Reverend Horton Heat, Butthole Surfers, Rilo Kiley, Kermit Ruffins, Judas Priest, Cheap Trick, The Subdudes, Depeche Mode, The Cars, Yellow, Beth Orton, Tina freaking Turner, Delbert McClinton, Adam Ant, Jerry Lee Lewis, very into Alexa Ray Joel as of late, Joni Mitchell, Buckwheat Zydeco, C.J. Chenier, CCR, Cream, MARCIA BALL - love it all. Music sets the tone for whatever you're doing. Y'know, that whole 'life's soundtrack' BS - but it's not BS!

Movies:

Of course Citizen Kane, then every John Wayne movie except for The Alamo, The Shootist, The Cowboys, Sands of Iwo Jima, Wake of the Red Witch, The Fighting Seebees and Reap the Wild Wind - because he dies in them and he isn't supposed to die so those films should just go away, AND Gehngis Kahn, because it sucks. He also dies in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Sea Chase (he coulda lived maybe in this one), The Deceiver (as a corpse only), and Central Airport - but you don't actually see him die...so that's different. The Longest Day. Saving Private Ryan. Harold & Maude. So I Married an Axe Murderer. 12 Angry Men. The Fifth Element. American Flyers. To Kill A Mockingbird. Lost in Translation. A Love Song for Bobby Long. Say Anything. Once. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. High Fidelity. Napoleon Dynamite. Runaway Jury. Grosse Point Blank. The Name of The Rose. American Gangster. Constantine. White Chicks (shut-up, you know it's funny). The Changeling. Dementia 13 - so spooky. The Matrix (1 & 3; 2 was a waste). Executioners' Song. Night of the Living Dead. 28 Days Later. Resident Evil. Anything with Jackie Chan in it. Dawn of the Dead. Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Steel Magnolias. Big Trouble in Little China. Sixteen Candles. Breakfast Club. The Exorcist. Blade Runner. Coal Miner's Daughter. All of the Lethal Weapons flicks. James Bond flicks: Shawn Connery & Pierce Brosnan preferred. Darkness Falls. The Rock. Layer Cake. Fight Club. Sabrina (the remake - sorry Audrey). Apollo 13. A Bridge Too Far. Waiting for Guffman. Spinal Tap. Best in Show. Little Miss Sunshine. The Day Trippers. Drop Dead Gorgeous. Dances With Wolves. A Mighty Wind. Party Girl (Parker Posey is the best actress on the planet). Blade - all three. Jaws (1). Shopgirl (Steve Martin is a genius). Memento. It's A Wonderful Life (I CAN'T HELP IT!!!). A Christmas Story (you really WILL shoot your eye out). Pretty much any vampire movie. Pretty much anything with Parker Posey in it. Pretty much anything with John Cusack in it. And finally...Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Television:

I...love...DEXTER!!! Heroes. How I Met Your Mother. Supernatural. Dresden Files. The Office. Eureka. My Name is Earl. The Class. Lost. Scrubs. ER. Medium. LA Ink. Chelsea Handler. Grey's Anatomy. Brothers & Sisters. Top Chef. A Haunting. Ghost Hunters - love Jay & Grant. Rachel Ray's $40-A-Day. THE YOUNG ONES. Six Feet Under. Dead Like Me. Can't forget Dark Shadows, which I think gave me my taste for the creepy and macabre. Oh, and I liked Forever Knight...but not Buffy.

Books:

Favorite book of all time: Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, published 1938. Even the movie version is good - dark and freaky. Second favorite book of all time: A Confederacy of Dunces. IGNATIOUS RULES!!! I love all of the characters, this book just eats you alive. Off Magazine Street by Ronald Everett Capps, which became A Love Song for Bobby Long....amazing. Anne Rice: I have a signed 1st edition of Interview, have met her a couple of times, been to her house (outside - y'know, the usual 'stalker' fare). Stephen King back in the day. Very much into the team of Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston - Agent Pendergast kicks serious butt. I like Dan Brown - he's quite inventive. Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth is amazing (sequal coming in 07). C.S. Lewis. Henry James. Shirley Jackson. James Patterson.
