The Devlins

Irish Indie Band featured in 6 Feet Under, Closer

About Me

The Devlins debut album ‘Drift’ was realised in 1994 on Capitol records amid high praise from RollingStone (“Stunning….****”) and Billboard magazine (“Single of the week”). The first of four gold-selling albums contained two top twenty singles, “Almost Made You Smile” and “Someone To Talk To”. It was recorded in Daniel Lanois’ New Orleans studio with award-winning producer Malcolm Burn (Iggy Pop, Patti Smith). To promote the album the band embarked on a tour of North America, which lasted 14 months. After a well-deserved break the band went back into the studio to contribute to one of the biggest-selling soundtracks of all time “Batman Returns”. Following that it was back to the full-time recording session that would become “Waiting”, the band’s second album. The location this time was Montreal and the producer the band chose to work with was French-Canadian Pierre Marchand. Once again, the album received rave reviews from the American press (“Heaven’s Wall – one of the best singles of the year” – Los Angeles Times) but the band also began to gain recognition in Europe, receiving five-star reviews from Q, Mojo, The Guardian and the Sunday Times. As a result, the band began a North American and European tour in 1997, which lasted a year and a half. ’Waiting’, the album’s title track was to become the “slow-burner” single with which most people identified. Voted as one of the Top 30 Best Irish singles ever, it appeared on several compilations and soundtracks, most notably the HBO hit show ‘Six Feet Under’. Recently the album’s opener “World Outside” was featured in the blockbuster ‘Closer’ The Devlins’ third album, ‘Consent’, was their first self-produced record but had contributions from various friends and collaborators like Tori Amos, Robert Bell (The Blue Nile) and Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam, Macy Gray). Released in 2002, the album includes some of the strongest Devlins’ songs to date, such as the singles “Static In The Flow” and “There Is A Light”. Once again the band embarked on a tour of N. America and Europe to promote ‘Consent’ before beginning work on the fourth album ‘Waves’. This time they drafted in English engineer Danton Supple, known for his production work with Doves, Coldplay and Starsailor. During this most recent recording session, the band received an invitation to contribute to the American compilation cd ‘Modern Day Troubadors’. Appearing alongside established artists such as Johnny Cash, Jeff Buckley, Daniel Lanois and Ron Sexsmith confirms The Devlins’ status as respected songwriters and musicians.
