Live solo performer

Many years ago I played in Adelaide bands - Cat Ballou, Boating Accident, Mission Impossible. From 1994 I took a break from the ’band scene’ to concentrate on composition, recording and musical self-reflection. In the past couple of years I have begun to play live around Adelaide as a solo performer. I find solo performance and working as a solo artist very rewarding - as I am by own boss! My live performance & repertoire varies according to the environment I play in... Solo acoustic - with my acoustic guitar alone I can play at least an hour of solo guitar instrumental material. If my vocal chords are up to it, I can fill the set out with 3 or 4 songs (mostly covers!). Solo acoustic (looping) - as above, but with the addition on my looping equipment I can fill the set out with some multi-layered pieces, improvisations, and interesting rhythmic accompaniments. I can play for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Electronic Guitar - with all my equipment and relying heavily on loops and long delay soundscapes and a drum machine I can create complex and exciting musical performances with an emphasis on lead guitar soloing and improvisation - my material sounds very much like Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Mike Oldfield. I fill the set out with some acoustic pieces and vocal numbers. I can play all night!! All I really need is some interesting visuals like film projections and large inflatable toys!!!!

My Interests

Music:

Band Members:

I am primarily a solo artist / performer

Occasionally I perform (jam) with other musicians, incl Andy Salvanos - who plays 10 String Chapman Stick.

Here is an overview of my live guitar / looping set up...

I play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, use various effects and looping devices ( Boss RC2 & DD20) to create soundscapes and live backing tracks, I use an Alesis HR 16 drum machine, which is usually played ’live’ (I tap the buttons) and loop the sounds. I also perform vocal on a few numbers. Instruments used:
* Fender Strat 57 Reissue (Jap ca.1987) - with some customisations
* Washburn Acoustic D25s (with LR Baggs M1 pickup fitted)
* Squier Bullet Strat (recenlty purchased - cheap back up guitar - also looks good on stage - and actually plays and sounds good!!)
* Epiphone Gibson (Jr Les Paul type guitar) - my first backup guitar - but might sell this as i prefer the sound and feel of Strats!
* Morley Wah
* Boss pedals - incl Overdrives, Super Octave, Pitchshifter delay, etc.
* Volume pedal - important for violin type effects, soundscape stuff, and an important means to cut the signal when changing guitars
* EBOW - don’t know how I ever played without it. The definitive ’Rob McDade’ device
* Boss RC-2 - loop station - my main sound on sound recorder (looper)
* Boss DD-20 - super long delays, and sound on sound recording (looping)
* Behringer UB 1202 mixer - this is my little guitar rig signal flow mixer - I put all instruments into this and out put into guitar amp / PA. I use the FX loop to send 2 signals - one to the RC-2 and one to the DD-20 - so I can operate both devices independently of one another

Personal Philosophy on the Ethics of Live Performance

Although at some point in a performing musician's career it is inevitable, I do not agree with the idea of playing for nothing, or a token fee (like a taxi fare home!) Many people mostly pub owners, a...
