This 26 year old songwriter from Fayetteville, North Carolina
explores the themes of love, regret and loss in his lyrics, his music
takes on an additional dimension at his live shows incorporating
looping pedals and guitar effects while playing solo acoustic. "I
always seem to end up playing with bands that are either alot heavier
than me or more pop punk. So I had to do something to get people's
attention," Shane says. Sharing stages with the likes of Further Seems
Forever, Elliot, Mae, Copeland, Denali, Codeseven, Count the Stars and
Dishwalla. Shane was also featured on a
compliation CD in AMP magazine.
In the Spring of 2004 Shane headed out on a 2 month national tour
with Steel Train from Drive Thru Records. "The coolest thing about that
tour was it was my first time that I was traveling in a tour bus. I
mean at one point in time that's every musician's dream. I think
Anthrax had the bus before we did, David Coperfield did too I think so
that was a pretty 'magical' experience in itself." Shane jokes. "I was
pretty shocked when I would show up to places that I have never been
before and kids actually knew who I was. It was pretty cool to see my
split/ep in Tower Records even though I believe it should have never
been released and they were just mere demos of songs."
Later in 2004 Shane's mother and biggest supporter was diagnosed
with Cancer and passed away shortly after midnight December 4th 2004.
"I pretty much felt like giving up on life, giving up on love, giving
up on myself. I recall one of the last conversations I had with my
mother and she told me that she just wanted me to play. The only thing
that got me through it was just sitting alone and playing guitar and
tears pouring from my eyes. My true friends told me that I can't just
give up on music and that it was a part of me that was missing."
Now Shane has come back with a new passion and along with a more mature sound. Shane dropped the stage name, Conceiting the Victory
which he played under since 2002, and decided to just go by his own
name, Shane Kelly. There were a number of reasons for the name change,
such as a business decision as well as personal. "The stuff I am
writing now is much more honest and I kinda felt the most honest and
vulnerable thing I could do was to just go by Shane. To me a true
artist has to be vulnerable and that's what a lot of today's music is
missing."
