Dennis C. Surrendi
Dennis was born on January 26, 1944 in the small coal mining town of Wayne near Drumheller in southeastern Alberta. He was the son of a Russian mother and an Italian father. His father and grandfather were coal miners. With the advent of oil and gas energy in the 1940's, the coal industry collapsed forcing his family to move to Calgary where they were required to live under very poor conditions.
Both Dennis’ parents encouraged him to work hard at getting an education. He completed his high school matriculation at Crescent Heights High School in Calgary after which he played professional hockey for three years. In 1963, he decided to seek a university education. Between 1963 and 1969, Dennis achieved a BSc and MSc in Fish and Wildlife Management and Ecology at Montana State University. He then pursued a PhD at the University of Wisconsin in Madison during 1969 and 1970.
Following his academic training, Dennis returned to Canada to hold a number of technical positions with the Canadian Wildlife Service and Environment Canada during the 1970's. His career then evolved into management and during the late 1970's through to 1994, Dennis held a number of senior executive positions in the Federal Government and various Provincial Governments. Dennis retired from the public service in 1994 and assumed the position of CEO of two international corporations. He held this position until March 5, 2001.
Over time, Dennis has gained international recognition as a sculpture, and his efforts with oil painting have also gained him a solid reputation as an artist.
