Missive from Davy Jones Locker?
Nay, nay, no bottles from the bottom of the briny deep. I not be dead. Just lyin' low. Thar be many do think me dead an'it be me thought we ought just let 'em go on thinkin' it. I find thar be benefits jus' waitin' fer takin' an' many rewards ripe for the reapin' when ye be a pirate gone dead! An' if'n ye promise to keep me livin' a secret, I promise to share ye a piece o' me fortunes! Come on now, I knows ye be a good friend to me, aye? What d'ya say, me finest mate?
O Captain! My Captain!
Have ye ever actually read
"O Captain! My Captain!" by Walt Whitman?
'Tis only very recently that I, meself, have done so and I be findin' it a poem, and a bit o' history, worth knowin'....
O Captain! My Captain!
a poem by Walt Whitman
O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up--for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

News Bulletin:
What happened to Stowaway Gretyl?
This just in:
Despite earlier expectations, more bodies from the wreckage of Bombay’s Flying Fish were recovered and identified. All passengers and crew are now accounted for but rather than wrapping things up, this information has bred a new mystery.
Insiders have revealed that the person signed aboard as Stowaway Gretyl was actually an imposter. As of yet, officials are not releasing names but speculations are abuzz. Some surmise that a female of lower status took on the personae to gain further opportunity. Others hold the theory that this person took on the name simply to .. responsibility for her crimes to another.
Circumstances are likely to grow clearer when the deceased’s name and details are released. But still one question remains.
Where is Stowaway Gretyl?
News Bulletin:
We regret to inform you that the vessel Stowaway Gretyl was aboard was found shipwrecked off the coast of Africa several days ago. Not all of the bodies have been recovered but there's little hope of recovering anything identifiable at this point. All of Gretyl's known personal effects were found among the debris. She is presumed dead. Due to the severity of the collision and the surrounding environment, this accident has been deemed unsurvivable.

We searched high an' low fer her. Our travels took us from Portland, OR, to Seattle, WA an' Vancouver, BC. We finally be findin' her in Rock Hall, MD. She gave us a good chase, she did. Her name be

Swift Escape .

She be a 2005 Hunter 44 Deck Salon in pristine condition. 'Twas great luck, an' a bit o' footwork, that led to her capture.
Them in Maryland be dismantling her as we speak. She should be in transit by August 15th an' will be reassembled in Seattle, WA.

Here they be liftin' her out o' the water fer a good hull cleanin'.

(Granuaile also known as Grace O'Malley)
Perhaps most intriguing of all is the fact that Granuaile succeeded in competing within the male-oriented environment in which she operated without appearing to jettison her femininity. Her success and notoriety were not achieved at the expense of her womanhood. On the contrary she maximized and utilized her feminine attributes and enjoyed the pleasures her womanhood conferred through her marriages, motherhood, and sexual fulfillment- surely the exemplification of a true feminist.

How can a woman be expected to be happy
with a man who insists on treating her
as if she were a perfectly normal human being?
~Oscar Wilde

Here's an ol' sea shanty I be findin' in Terry Breverton's "The Pirate Dictionary":
The Chivalrous Shark
The most chivalrous fish in the ocean,
To the ladies forbearing and mild,
Though his record be dark,
The man-eating shark
Will eat neither woman nor child.
He dines upon seamen and skippers,
And tourist his hunger assuage
And a fresh cabin boy
Will inspire him with joy,
If he's past the maturity age.
A doctor, a lawyer, a preacher,
He'll gobble one any fine day.
But the ladies, God bless 'em,
He'll only address 'em
Politely and go on his way.
I can readily cite you an instance
Where a lovely young lady of Bream;
Who was tender and sweet
And delicious to eat,
Fell into the bay with a scream.
She struggled and flounced in the water
And signalled in vain for her bark.
And she'd surely be drowned
If she hadn't been found
By a chivalrous man-eating shark.
He bowed in a manner most polished,
Thus soothing her impulses wild.
"Don't be frightened," he said,
"I've been properly bred,
And will eat neither woman nor child."
He proffered his fin and she took it,
Such gallantry none can dispute,
While the passengers cheered
As the vessel they neared,
And a broadside was fired in salute.
They soon stood alongside the vessel,
While a lifesaving dinghy was low'r'd.
With the pick of the crew
And her relatives few
And the mate and the skipper aboard.
They hauled her aboard in a jiffy,
While the shark stood attention the while.
Then he raised on his flipper,
And ate up the skipper,
And went on his way with a smile.
Now this shows the prince of the ocean,
To the ladies forbearing and mild,
Though his record be dark,
The man-eating shark
Will eat neither woman nor child.

These be some piratical words an' phrases that be ticklin' me fancy:
Belly timber- food
Bring yer arse to an anchor- sit down
Ballast- It be a common enough word, 'tis true but the origin is what be appealin' t' me. 'Tis from the Old German and meant 'belly load'.

If'n ye be headin' out Portlandia way, I offer some useful advice. Thar be an inlet where a pirate ship can drop anchor and be assured of relative safety. And situated in this inlet is Portland's own pirate haven. It be the haven I call me own and the place where Down in the Hold gathers and meets. It's here at:

The heart of Portland's pirate community resides in the activities of Pirates of Portlandia. Ye can see them participating in the Starlight Parade, terrorizing the city with pub raids, singing Christmas carols at local hospitals and discovering new ways to cause good-hearted mischief and mayhem. Piratically speaking, Madame Cheng be me favorite, hands down. Not on'y was she th' mos' powerful pirate o' th' female persuasion, she also ruled a legion o' pirates larger in number than any other, 'fore her or since. She finagled her way to th' top from th' lowly status o' a prostitute. Then when th' proper time came fer her reign t' end, she went on t' bargain with an' exploit th' government, findin' legitimate titles an' places fer herself an' many o' her underlings. She kept herself politically active in ways that women o' th' day weren't allowed an' went on t' die o' natural causes a' what was a' that time th' ripe ol' age o' 69. It be th' mos' successful livin' out o' an' mos' peaceful endin' o' life by a pirate I've e'er read o'. Let's hear it fer th' ladies!

I find this image so interesting because of how this woman is dressed.
It illustrates so well the blending of such contrasting traits as aggression and femininity.
