Life is something like a stream. Things happen. Leaves fill it up, animals waller in it, spring floods fill it with mud. Bright sunshine makes it like a mirror glass; sprinkling rain makes it grow wider, but it still moves on - unchanging - the same stream even with all the things that happen to it. It breaks through the leaves, it clears itself of the animal wallering, the muddy waters turn clean again. The sunshine and the rain it accepts, for they give life and strengthen it, but it really could have done without them. They are extras... but the Lord knows we need them to help give meaning - to strengthen us, to help us reflect the sunshine.
