I work these hands to bleed

About Me

I am not an American citizen. I don't really want to be one (no offense, I really, really like it here). I am from Trinidad. I was born there and I lived there until I was eleven years old. Then I moved to Eugene, Oregon with my mother, father and younger brother. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------I started playing the guitar when I was sixteen years old. I'm mostly self taught and I wish I knew more about music theory and such, but I haven't the drive to devote myself to studying it. After I learned my first few chords I taught myself some Ben Harper songs. He's great. I liked his music so much that I played it at open mics. This is also when I began to sing. Up until this point singing was something that I did in church (my father was a pastor for most of my childhood). it doesn't come as naturally for me as playing my intrument does. I think that my voice has gotten better over the last few years, but it is still the part of my musical self that I am most critical of. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------I'm going to use these next few sentences to tell you something that most folks either don't believe or are very surprised to hear. I have no desire to be famous. Honest. I don't ever want someone to hear/see me perform and get the idea that I am "unapproachable". I don't want a big record deal. I don't want to be on MTV. I enjoy playing music, I enjoy the expression and the art of it. I'm a simple guy. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------Upon hearing what I wanted to do with my life (or at least some of it), my cousin Avalon asked me "Well, do you know what you want to tell the world?". At the time this question scared me. I had never thought about it. I really don't have advice for the world. I'd like to think that I have as much wisdom as my twenty-three year old self can muster, and it gets me by, but that doesn't mean I'll have an album full of politcal anthems. I've come to a place where I'm comfortable writing whatever comes out of me. I may express fear, insecurity, pride, anger, youth, wisdom, uncertainty and love. If it's how I felt at the time, then it's how I'll sing it. I'm cool with that. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------I think the most important quality a songwriter can have is honesty. Witty wordplay, clever story telling and brilliant rhyming schemes all come second. I love a well written song. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------Thanks for visiting. I hope you enjoy your stay at my little corner of the interweb. - Caleb
