Symphony of Shadows

'One who dares not feel, spurning the flames, has renounced his Life...' ~ Chris Dean, from 'Symphon

About Me

My name is Tanith. As a mask maker, I strive to be a creator of illusions, of intrigue, of mystery and transformation. Venice is the City of Illusion par excellence, the Theatre of the World. Amid her decaying beauty, Carnevale, masquerade balls and maschere, my heart and imagination were captured, and I knew what I had to become. My time there was brief, fleeting, yet in those few short days the hand that she placed so determinedly, and yet so enigmatically upon my soul held fast and firm. It has never left me and has been my constant guide and inspiration.

I returned home to Britain consumed with a need to learn the making of such potent and evocative objects. Throughout the ensuing years I have worked with many different materials and methods, but I have always been drawn back primarily to the ancient Venetian technique of paper layering, which I have gradually adapted, transformed and combined into my own personal version and vision.
Each mask I create is a distinct personality, intended to be not merely a disguise but a role. Each has its own story contained within the layers, a life and identity that is the pleasure of the wearer to discover and enact.
Please be aware that all images posted on this Profile are copyright of my photographer, Chris Dean, and all mask designs are the property of Symphony of Shadows. Please do not reproduce without permission.
