I'd like to say something wildly fascinating like, "I'm just your average cephalopod enthusiast" but the truth is I'm just another dork embedded in an entire generation of proud weirdos.
I remember a time when saying "I'm a geek" meant something distinctive. Sure it may have meant having to roll 1d12 against dying alone, but it gave you a real sense of how fundamentally lame I am. You got a sense that in the great John Cusack movie that is life, I was that girl in the back row with the glasses and the exacting knowledge of the Death Star's hypothetical architecture. The girl who would be ignored not only by the popular pretty boys, but also by affable loser John Cusack as well, even after he comes to realize that the pretty girl he has been lusting after is a beautiful vessel containing no substance. Even within the shameful hierarchy of unpopular girls, I was still strictly second string.
Now saying "I'm a geek" may mean anthing from "I own a computer" to "I own a hand-inked reply letter written to me by Jhonen 'JTHM' Vasquez back in 1996" It may mean "I have read 'The Hobbit'" or it may mean "I personally moderated a largish internet forum dedicated to 80's video games, toys and cartoons and have been a SA goon since 2001" It could mean that "I know what 'Bah weep granah weep ninni bong' is from" or it could mean that "I take great personal pride at having completely memorized the Bene Gesserit litany against fear" Maybe I have played Halo once or twice or maybe I was a beta-tester for The Sims Online. Hell, for all you know I still have my NES, fifty cartridges, qtips and a bottle of rubbing alcohol at the ready. Possibly I have my alcohol/blow/double-stacked cartridge technique completely mastered.
It's hard to tell sometimes.
