About Me

Letter from the PublisherFinally, our vision has come to fruition. Our inspiration was to create a publication that would help to give deserving dance pioneers and aspiring artists national exposure by capturing their talents in each issue. Four years ago, my daughter, Neeca Wilder, then thirteen, inspired me to venture into the world of dance. She had been dancing since she was 9 years old with a local dance company and wanted to start her own. She came to me and said, “Mommy, I need to talk to you about starting my own business.” She then went on to list on a white, lined piece of paper her rough draft of her goals of starting a dance studio, a recording studio, a dance booking agency, and a dance magazine. After reading this, I was in awe. I told her to work on the plan some more and I truly gave it no more thought. For six months she bugged me until I agreed to sit down and discuss her “business plan”. At the time, she had several years of professional dance instruction and was very serious about pursuing her dance career as a dancer and choreographer. After awhile, I realized that I would have to examine her “dream sheet” further to get her off my back, so I did just that. I gave her some short term goals, like, starting her own dance troupe, offering after-school dance classes at a local community center in Boston, and revising her plan as she went along. She did just that. She had over 50 students, ranging from the ages of 5 – 25 years old, elementary to college students took classes with her. After realizing the difficulty in maintaining a dance studio and school work, she decided to give up teaching. As I was doing research on dance and where it originated from, I found out a lot of information that I had not known about dance that wasn’t being shared in the dance publication I was reading. I went to some friends and colleagues and asked if they would help with forming a dance magazine that would talk about the history of African American influence in dance and other forms of dance that may interest others like me. You are holding the realization of those efforts. I thank all the people who gave their time and talents in helping us with developing Hot Stepz Magazine.Be Inspired and Enjoy! J.
