BIOGRAPHIE Paul James Berry Als Gitarrist von Rose Of Avalanche schnuppert Paul James Berry zwischen 1986 und 1992 die Luft des Erfolgs: Mit der Band veröffentlicht er drei Alben, ist in Europa als Headliner unterwegs und eröffnet Konzerte für David Bowie, Nico oder The Mission. Dann beschließt er, solo weiterzumachen – und muss noch mal von vorne anfangen."Ich hoffte, auf das Interesse von ein paar der alten Rose Of Avalanche-Fans zu stoßen. Das gelang mir aber nicht, hauptsächlich, weil ich nicht fähig war, mich zu promoten. Meistens hatte niemand eine Ahnung, wer zum Teufel Paul James Berry war" erzählt er über die ersten Jahren danach, in denen er sich mit Auftritten in Pubs und "every shithole I could find" über Wasser hält. Schließlich beschließt er, seine Koffer zu packen, und reist kreuz und quer durch Europa, bevor er in Berlin landet. Mit der Unterstützung eines Freundes gelingt es ihm, immer wieder einen Auftritt in einem Vorprogramm zu ergattern. "Es gab nur selten Geld dafür, aber ich hatte das Gefühl, etwas Wichtiges zu tun – vielleicht nicht für die Welt, aber wenigstens für mich selbst". Immerhin spielt er als Opener für Calexico, Caspar Brötzmann, Giant Sand, Penelope Houston oder Vic Chesnutt.1996 begibt sich der in Leeds Geborene nach London, um sein erstes Album aufzunehmen. Mit Gelegenheitsjobs verdient er sich das Geld zusammen, um ins Studio zu gehen. Das selbst aufgenommene und produzierte Ergebnis, "Paul James Berry", schafft es zwar nicht in den Vertrieb, verkauft sich bei seinen Konzerten aber ganz gut und lenkt etwas Aufmerksamkeit auf ihn. Er kehrt zurück nach Deutschland und schließt einen Vertrag mit dem kleinen Label Supersonic ab.Berrys zweites Album "Ginnel" erscheint 2000 und stößt auf das Interesse der Medien, die ihn mit Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Tindersticks oder Eels vergleichen. Neben seiner Gitarre und Stimme ist diesmal auch eine Band zugange, die das Singer/Songwriter-Material mit Elektronika anreichert. "Ich war auf der Suche nach dem Gleichgewicht zwischen 'natürlichen' und 'gesampleten' Klängen. Ich wollte sie kombinieren, um einen souligen und vibrierenden Sound zu erreichen", erklärt er den Schritt im Nachhinein."Nations", das 2004 erscheint, verzichtet dagegen weitgehend auf Nachbearbeitungen und lehnt sich wieder mehr an die Traditionen des Genres an. Anschließend zieht sich Berry zurück. 2006 kündigt er auf seiner Webseite an, an einem neuen Album zu arbeiten.
BIOGRAPHIE TThomthom G(eigen)schrey TThomthom G(eigen)schrey ist seines Zeichens einer der wenigen noch in der Kulturhauptstadt lebender, geborener Berliner und passionierter Musikfan und -Szenesupporter, als langjähriger Musikjournalist für viele Printmedien tätig und als Kulturtäter für diverse Musiker, als wandelndesRock- Archiv und Kulturmanagement, und Promoter und Booker für den von ihm aufgebauten, seitdem mit gutem Ruf behafteten, berüchtigten Indie- Club DIE INSEL DER JUGEND, managt Paul James Berry zwischen 1992 und 1995 auf dessen Selbstfindungs- und Neuorientierungspfaden, als Booking- und Tourmanager, Hans - Dampf- in - allen-Gassen, Inspirator, Aktivist, kreativer Ideenlieferant, Labelsucher,guter Geist , Muse, und Bett und Tisch teilender Kumpan. Studio Aufenthalte im VIELKLANG Studio und divers Live-Mitschnitte führen denn zum ersten selbst veröffentlichen Album. Nachdem TT das Handtuch warf, da er als Einmann-Unternehmen ohne Sponsoren und reiche Eltern in der Hinterhand schlicht irgendwann überfordert und pleite war, fand Paul eine kleine westdeutsche Plattenfirma (Supermusic), auch dank der umtriebigen Tour de Force, die sie beide gemeinsam durch West- und Ost- und Süd- und Norddeutschland getrieben hatte; allein in seltsamen Ostclubs am DJ Pult eingestöpselt oder in anderen lausig kalten "Ostläden", die die P.A. für g´Geld ausgeliehen hatten, oder in Kunstgalerien oder vor dem rossburger report odert Caspar Brötzmann oder auf Tour mit den neuseeländischen BAILTER SPACE, GIANT SAND, nebst Vic Chestnutt, mit dem TThomthom dann auch zur Zugabe "Youre so vain" sein altes Lieblingslied geigend auf die Bühne des Berliner Lofts kletterte(dokumentiert auf der GIANT SAND Live CD "Goods & Services"),odeSongwritern die Pauls geistesbrüder sind, wie townes van Zandt kurz vor seinem Tod, oder Barbara Manning....Die Zusammenarbeit endete rund mit der Einspielung einiger schöner u n d weirder Geigenspuren und Ideen zu den 2 songs "Haunted Tune of the Bugle Player" und "X-Factor für Pauls Zweitwerk "GINNEL", denen TThomthom mit innerhalb von 1 stunde eingespielten elektrischen Geigenschreien und Drones und Wall of Sound Flächen, die zu TTs Markenzeichen geworden sind, seine Charakteristika hinzufügte.. Beide Songs sind hier zu hören..TT Geigenschrey spielte fortan wieder mehr selbst Musik und wurde Fulltime Musiker, nachdem er die halbe Untergrundszene Deutschlands als Veranstalter und Schreiber gefördert und beschrieben hatte. (Irgendwann ist man selbst endlich mal dran). For over 10 years, Paul James Berry has been roaming the roads of Europe with his acoustic guitar and bag full of songs. His interesting story has always contained the same sense of energy and hope that is common with some of the great artists of this world, who suffer and live for their art?His musical story starts in the backstreets of Leeds, England where in the early eighties he formed ?as the guitarist? a band which enjoyed cult success, called The Rose of Avalanche. After a few years he became fed up with the direction that the band was taking, and frustrated by petty band-related problems.From then on he decided to call the band a day and hit the road alone. He wrote and sang his songs and started to tour as a kind of music ghost, turning up spontaneously at venues and convincing audiences of his music and lyrics.His passion, drive and talent was soon picked up on, and Paul began playing concerts and complete tours supporting the likes of Belly, Frank Black, Calexiceo, Vic Chesnutt, Kevin Coyen, The Cranberries, Drugstore, Giant Sand, Nikki Sudden, Swell, McLusky , Townes Van Zandt, before going on to play several European tours in his own right?.In 2000, Paul James Berry recorded his first official studio album ?Ginnel? which was a masterpiece of singer/songwriting dream material, filled with history, emotion, depth and power.
