Welcome to the Land of Baboon

About Me

Professor Shehab (aka Sassan Gari) is one of the most mysterious figures in Brooklyn's underground electronic scene. As a founding father of the Middle Eastern Dub movement his influence has inspired a legion of musicians and followers around the globe. Often likened to the late Bryn Jones aka Muzlimgauze, Prof. Shehab is known for his incredible Persian flavored beats and mind-blowing metaphysical soundscapes. In 1997, Shehab put the call out to his global network of collaborators and together they formed The Baraka Foundation. Featured in its catalog are releases from Prof Shehab's own critically acclaimed projects Qaballah Steppers and Baraka Orchestra, and releases from Dr. Israel, Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto), Umar Bin Hassan, Genesis P. Orridge, Robert Anton Wilson, Jilala (recorded by Paul Bowles and Brion Gysin during a trance ritual in 1965), and Strong Foundation (featuring Yami Bolo, Sugar Minott and Rocker T). His current label venture Baboon Records is geared primarily to his own projects, but also includes a beautifully recorded audio document of Voodoo ritual music from Peter Wetherbee (Bill Laswell, Axiom) called A Mountain Thinking River Fire, and a sound-clash release from Shehab's long time friend and collaborator Dr. Israel titled Dr Israel vs. Dr X.
