About Me
On 9/24/07 The Bambi Slam will be releasing "I'M ALIVE" their first CD in 20 yrs. An amazing and original techno punk sound made by mixing hip hop , hard rock and techno beats and loops with punk guitars and vocals. Likened to the bastard child of the Aphex Twin and Iggy and the Stooges and made from samples , loops and bits of records by Daft Punk, Kiss, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Blind Willie Johnson, Schooly D, Johnny Cash, German one hit wonders Trio, LL Cool Jay, Bomb the Bass, AC/DC, Chem Bros, Beck etc, with only guitars and vocals added!!! Only the song "Kill Whitey" features live drums as the main groove from longtime Bambi drummer John 'Basher" Stone who also added drums to the loops on "Buffalo" and "Bring it Back". Every song is written in 1920's blues based open D tuning and so melodic that if u take away the samples, noise and screaming, each song can be played and sang with an acoustic guitar!! With songs about the corprate Mafia "Monsters Exist", crackhead male prostitutes " Jonesin", a reply song to George Harrisons "All to Much" laughingly title "Yeah Yer Right ", songs about driving and blue collar crime "Los Angeles" and "Buffalo", the Zen side of life "Can U Rock It", and the ultimate frenzied take on the ruling minority "Kill Whitey", every song a little work of art!!After releasing 3 singles in 1987 on Product Inc./MUTE Records in the UK, put out by Rough Trade Records as the "Is" EP in the US. They then released their debut and only full length CD on Blanco y Negro/WEA in the UK, a huge thrill as the band where great fans of label mates the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Warner Bros Records put the record out in the US. The band played and toured with the likes of Iggy, PiL, the Cult, Big Black, Fields of Nephilm , Sonic Youth , the Pixies etc. and was managed by Andrew Eldridge, singer of The Sisters of Mercy and his partner Boyd Steemson at Merciful Mngmt. They also did BBC radio sessions for both John Peel and Janice Long. Then they seemingly vanished off the face of the earth!..Arguably the Syd Barret or Roky Erickson of late 80s Alternative rock. In reality Roy never stopped making records and the one man band , who played or programmed all the drums, bass and guitar, wrote the cello arrangements played by Linda Miller, and sang lead vocals on every single track the band ever recorded, besides one song, "The Awful Flute Song" which featured the only live version of the band with child hood friend Nat on Bass and their next door neighbour Nic , from their squat on the Old Kent Rd., on drums. During the past 20 yrs there have been many line ups of the Bambi Slam live, the Bambi Slam has continued to make records and had their music used in various MTV shows , Network TV shows, and Dvds and films like Jack Ass season One, and while the band had a publishing deal with Sony/ATV in the 90s, and multiple record deals, the latest being the start up major Red Ant Records which went bankrupt on the eve of the Bambi's 2000 Cd release, silencing other great acts like Red Ant labelmates Love and Rockets and Salt and Pepa!! Due to label politics, corporate shake ups etc, the band couldn't seem to get a record out!!! Now finally their first CD of all NEW music is being released. After the release of "I'M ALIVE" Lo-Fi Records/Corporate Risk will be releasing one full length CD from the catalogue for every new Bambi Slam CD we release. Which should end up being 8 LPs in the next 3 yrs!!
Roy was born outside of Manchester, England in Ashton Under Lyne and was raised in Toronto, Canada. After Meeting the RAMONES at a huge festival concert in Toronto when ROY was 14 and was part of a skateboard Team Demo where he wiped out bad on the huge half pipe in front of 50,000 people, he that day got his first and only guitar lesson from the legendary blues guitarist Johnny Winter. The next day Roy got a guitar stared playing and recording and continued to be good friends with Joey Ramone for years. Then at the age of 18 took those demos to the UK and the Bambi Slam was born. After having a great write up from Ron Rom in Sounds , the band then squatted the old Camberwell Odeon,,where the Beatles and Stones had once played, and when Rob Collins from Product Inc/MUTE came down to see his act World Domination Enterprises play this unique show, he saw the Bambis and they were signed on the spot, the rest is history, or lack there of!!! LOL...ENJOY!
