AzMan®, developers of a new musical genre dubbed "Fling" is a unique group hailing from Bridgetown, Barbados. The genre Fling described as a combination of flowing and singing in Barbadian pidgin, commonly referred to as ‘Bajan dialect’, was unofficially established when the group was founded in 2002. The quartet comprises members Ramon Dodson (Doddy), Deevon Clinton (Dee), Dwayne Gibbs (Gibbzydan) and Levi King (Levitance).
The foursome began performing at their Alma matter, Combermere Secondary School, where they wooed young audiences with their infectiously vehement style and intricately designed lyrics. There, the group participated in and won an Environmental Jingle Competition in 2002, and followed this appearance with a series of performances in high school concerts and pageants.
Largely influenced by the likes of The Wailers, The Jackson 5 and T.O.K, AzMan® has developed themselves and their craft into a marriage of colorful articulation and creole expression.
In 2006, the group was taken under the wing of Mystik Musik Entertainment, who has been responsible for their management since. In November of the same year, AzMan® released its first single, entitled “De Arrivalâ€, which they have described as the official introduction to the group and the genre Fling. The track created quite a buzz and received the accolade “Tune of the Day†three times on one of the nation’s popular radio stations. De Arrival was succeeded by a number of other peppy releases, namely “Phonecall†and the Crop over released “Come Longâ€.
AzMan’s year of inauguration proved to be a fructiferous one for the group, in which they saw performances at Youth Mania, the Shannon Ashley Talent Exhibition (SATE), The Hip-hop Festival, numerous pageants and a number of other similar events. Additionally, the group established a relationship with the international Research Company, 4Life®, and was responsible for the creation of the 4Life Barbados Jingle.
One distinct objective is evident when observing the work of this sprightly group, and that is, their quest to ensure that their music is a true reflection of self and heritage. The members of AzMan® seek to perpetuate their music in a form which is indigenous to their home land, and intend to take their genre fling to the world.
