Trash Pour 4

Foi uma surpresa: no coração da cidade de São Paulo nasceu o Trash Pour 4 , como um brotinho de feijão no algodão. Em pouco tempo quatro amigos músicos com alma de gourmands montaram um repertório de versões inusitadas (algumas delas ousadas) do pop internacional de várias épocas, até daquelas em que o pop não sabia que existia. De Domenico Modugno a Madonna, Burt Bacharach a George Michael, o Trash Pour 4 tocava de tudo: bastava que a música fosse boa e tivesse um certo cheiro de guardado. A brincadeira foi crescendo até atrair os sentidos de Eduardo Muszkat, presidente da MCD, e se transformar num belo disco de 14 faixas. Recycle vol. I (2005), para a felicidade de seus autores, foi outra surpresa: conquistou crianças e idosos, punks de carteirinha e almofadinhas, chamou a atenção de jornalistas e intelectuais, foi indicado ao Prêmio TIM 2006 na categoria melhor disco em música estrangeira e, o melhor de tudo, revelou-se um penetra nato de toca-cds por todo o Brasil. Nossos groupies, fãs, simpatizantes e desconfiados se indagavam: o que essa banda vai aprontar no segundo disco?
Cá entre nós, o TP4 se perguntava o mesmo. Primeiro de tudo, a banda tinha um desafio a alcançar: faltava no nosso repertório músicas brasileiras. Parecia fácil, mas em breve escolher, desmontar e remontar músicas da terra de Tom Jobim mostrou-se uma grande empreitada. Depois de uma intensa varredura na memória, pouco a pouco foram brotando canções que, de uma maneira ou de outra, se encaixavam no perfil do nosso repertório. Entre outras, “Sufoco”, sucesso na voz de Alcione, ganhou um arranjo dançante com um certo ar caribenho e a participação de Fernanda Takai (Pato Fu); “Geni”, talvez a música mais controversa de Chico Buarque, transformou-se num swing, escolha pitoresca (e interessante) para uma música tão ácida; Dorival Caymmi recebeu um arranjo com pitadas de pop, reggae, ska e surf rock, numa transformação radical de “Maricotinha”, que conta com a voz potente de Marcelo Pretto (Barbatuques, A Barca).
Além da mudança evidente na escolha do repertório, Super Duper chama a atenção pelo tom roqueiro, com mais atitude. A experiência de palco adquirida no último ano transparece na pegada forte e dançante, nos arranjos mais audaciosos e provocantes, na maior presença das nossas personalidades e influências individuais. O disco soa, certamente, muito mais do que uma mera continuação do anterior.
E, antes que você se pergunte, é claro que músicas estrangeiras também não poderiam faltar no nosso repertório. Dentre as escolhidas estão “Careless Whisper” (George Michael) -um flerte com o trip-hop-, já conhecida pelo público da banda. Há também “You’re so vain” (Carly Simon) num tour pela europa oriental, “What’s up” (4 Non Blondes), mezzo country mezzo britpop, uma versão delicada de “Like a Virgin”, e "Lithium", no Nirvana, transformado em chôro com direita a um arranjo para o quinteto de clarinetes Madeira de Vento.
Para os nossos fãs, mais um disco para ouvir até riscar. Para quem não curtiu o Vol. I, uma outra chance para gostar da banda. Para quem ainda não nos ouviu, uma ótima oportunidade para fazê-lo. Assim queremos o nosso novo disco, Super Duper. Divirta-se!

Recycling Pop Classics
TP4 (born Trash Pour 4) serves up an elegant blend of genres that have been wetting the appetites of critics and audiences alike since 2004. The band came about as a result of a spontaneous encounter of four talented musicians in the marvellous cultural melting pot that is the metropolis of São Paulo. TP4 transforms or recycles (hence the Trash in the name) pop classics, some of which have been “trashed” by the public for being démodé. Far from being a cover band, TP4 subverts the sounds and styles of popular music breathing new life into old songs with surprising new arrangements.
The defining element of TP4’s music is its excellent quality combined with total creative liberty and the chemistry of the members on stage. TP4 is a band with a strong stage presence and is renowned for the performative and interactive nature of its presentations, which take place in nightclubs, theatres and festivals. They attract a diverse public of different ages and social groups, for a groovy happening where the public soon connect with the repertoire, playing a guessing game where they try to identify which song is being performed.
Their first album, Recycle Vol. 1, launched in Brazil and Korea in 2005, included hit songs in English, Spanish and Italian, with a certain Brazilian flavour; including Madonna’s hit “Material Girl”, transformed into a xote, a traditional Brazilian rhythm, with a jazzy swing; an up-beat version of Burt Bacharat and Hal David’s classic “Close to you”; Domenico Modugno’s “Volare” and the famous bolero “Quizás, quizás, quizás”. The arrangements employ a wide range of genres, together with a clean acoustic sound, and oriental and classical touches to produce a light-hearted pop that invites you to dance. The album has been a success with the public as well as the critics, gaining considerable press coverage, including being selected in the category of Best Foreign Language Album for the prestigious Tim Music Awards.
In 2006 the group brought out Super Duper, its second album, launched in Brazil. It includes songs from popular Brazilian music, with innovative versions of songs by well-respected songwriters such as Chico Buarque (“Geni e o Zepelim”) and Dorival Caymmi (“Maricotinha”), as well as radio hits immortalized by Alcione, Secos e Molhados and Jane & Herondi. The album also includes Nirvana’s “Lithium” in a surprising traditional choro arrangement with a woodwind quintet, and Fred Astaire’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz” with a Greek touch in the strings. This album has a heavier “rock” sound, blended with vintage guitar, grand piano and more elaborate vocals together with new guest singers.
Currently the band, which consists of Natalia Mallo (bass, vocals and producer), Maria Portugal (drums, vocals, arrangements), Gustavo Ruiz (guitar, arrangements) and Dudu Tsuda (keyboard, arrangements), is preparing its third album that will be launched in 2008. In order to help define the form of the next album the group experiments live, in vibrant shows, full of improvisation, where they also perform songs of their own composition. The next work will present a more consolidated sound; more of a “band” album, with fewer guests and aiming to capture the energy of the live performances on disc.
May this year, TP4 will celebrate 4 years on the road and its first European Tour. The group will perform in London, Lisbon and Cannes, where it will be the headline of the Brazilian Night at the Cannes Film Festival.
The band chose to “review” songs present in the collective memory of the audience analysing the distinction between the popular and the commercial, good and bad taste, prejudice, dated music, renovation and the mixing of genres. It is a playful attempt to decipher these classics presenting a new perspective of the well known. Their musical influences include pillars of Brazilian music such as Caetano Veloso and Mutantes, French chanson and its contemporary exponents (Serge Gainsbourg, Paris Combo), Gypsy music, Klezmer, the Beatles, electro-acoustic music, pop-rock, North American folk music, Tango, pure Rock n’ Roll, and many other references that can be found in their personal baggage.
The premise of the group is to entertain, to make the audience dance and sing together, as well as contributing to the creation of new criteria, new ways of listening to popular music, and fostering more open audiences, with a greater interest in discovering something different.
