Greetings,
Welcome to the world of People Who GET It
People who GET what?
People Who GET It, Inc.(PWGI) exists because I am a huge choral and acoustic music geek, and I have to be involved in both or I die. The name of the corporation came from long conversations over the years about musicians, and people in general. There are those who GET what music is and does, and those who don't. This organization's purpose is to gather those who do. I have a Bachelor's degree in vocal music education and a Masters in vocal music performance and choral conducting. I have also been an acoustic artist since childhood.
One main reason for forming this organization in the beginning, was to help my nephew, Jeremiah Johnsen of Fistful of Nickels , get his acoustic career off the ground. I wanted to help him record a CD, and get it manufactured and out, so he could go on tour and start making a living doing what he loves. Thankfully, I was able to raise funds to do exactly that, and he is now touring several states and making his living in that way.... he's out so much now, I hardly ever see him :) -- The band he sings with - Joe Worrel and The Last Free Exit Band - will be going back out on the road in a couple of weeks.... I may see him in town at Mort's Cigar Bar or The Port - we'll see!
Music is universal. Music is a healing art. In that regard, I am happy to announce I have received a scholarship from Wesley Medical Center - the first awarded - to become a Certified Music Practitioner through the Music Healing and Transition Program . I will be attending classes in various locations around the country, will receive complete education and exposure to the art of bringing music to the sick and dying. I will then complete an internship at Wesley Medical Center, before I head out on my own to wherever I might be needed. It is a privilege and an honor to be the recipient of this award. I am taking donations to cover expenses associated with these classes, and appreciate those who contribute to this cause. Music has brought healing to me since I can remember, and has helped me through some very, very dark days. I am thankful I am able to enter into a program to allow me to become certified to bring musical healing to others.
I have a huge list of dreams for this organization. Already, I have brought internationally known artists to town - Stephen Bennett , Andy McKee ,
Masa Sumide ,
Dan LaVoie ,
Thomas Leeb ,
Bill Barwick - and have hosted concerts at The Orpheum, The Artichoke, Mosley Street Melodrama, and my house - house concerts are wonderful! My goal has been to keep tickets prices as low as possible so as many as possible are able to attend. One thing I am very adamant about is that PWGI remains an all-inclusive entity. I want people to participate in this organization because they believe in the mission, not because goodies are held back unless people become members. This is NOT a membership organization.
Singing is a community building activity, too. So I want people to be a part of People Who GET It's choral music community. I want to bring in musicians to build up the hearts, minds and spirits of the community as a whole, as well. One of my dreams is to bring in Bobby McFerrin - solo artist, musicial genius, and conductor - to present a concert and seminar for Wichita, or for all students in the city. It is vital we realize the importance and necessity of music in our lives.
I could go on and on, and often do. This is plenty of information for now. If you have questions or thoughts, please write me at [email protected]. And if you are able, plase donate any amount you can to further the mission. PWGI is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation, so any donation is tax deductible.
Best to you always,
Billie Fredholm
