Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen have packed houses and received critical accolades and awards since their humble beginnings in the late 1900’s. Recent Hit seasons at the Edinburgh Fringe, Sziget Festival in Budapest, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the Melbourne Festival, the Sydney Opera House, Christchurch and Wellington Arts Festivals have led to the group becoming a prominent feature on the International Arts and Music Festival circuit. Of course, their performances at the Kirov Opera and the Istanbul Carnival of the Monkeys are the stuff of legend.
In concert Mikelangelo commands the stage with his thunderous baritone; part-ringmaster, part-crooner, part-beast-possessed. A prolific songwriter of the highest calibre, he plumbs the metaphysical depths and creates an exotic storybook filled with tales that are at once inviting and foreboding.
The Black Sea Gentlemen are his formidable musical ensemble, with Rufino the Catalan Casanova on violin, The Great Muldavio on clarinet, Guido Libido on piano accordion and Little Ivan on double-bass. Together they waltz, tango and polka their way through a show that bristles with humour, pathos and beauty.
