Lord, have mercy!!!

About Me

Volkert has been playing guitar since he was about 12 years old. He's been writing songs fairly seriously since 1969. He's been writing and playing silly little love songs more recently. Sometimes they make perfect sense, too!

Volkert has overcome his fear of taking his precious guitar on the plane after purchasing one of the above cases. Take a look. Since purchasing my Clam, my guitar has made trips to and from San Diego, Santa Barbara and San Jose with no problem (my faith in taking my guitar on the plane has been restored).

My Interests

I play guitar and sing and sometimes I write songs. I like to jam with my friends and sometimes they appear on stage with me, and sometimes I appear with them. It's a simple life, but I like it.

Influences:

The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, The Theotokos, St. Peter, St. John, St. Paul, St. George, also John, Paul, George and Ringo, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bobby (Zimmy), Elvis, not Elton, Simon & Garfunkel, my sister who turned me on to the radio when I was a little kid, some of my music teachers, but not the little old lady who rapped my wrists with a ruler. Also my mother (Moeder) who listend to Bach while she ironed clothes and I played at her feet, my brother who came home from the Army with recordings by Glenn Miller, my other brother who took me to art galleries and taught me about guys like Vincent (not Allis, but Van Gogh), my eldest sister who always had chocolates in candy dishes at her house, my other sister who taught me that there's life after divorce, and my father (Vader) who taught me how to alphabetize. Then there's the nice lady at the Montlake Public Library who showed me the "Cowboy Sam" books. But mostly I'd like to thank Saint Nicholas for showing me the way back home. I'd also like to thank "Diva" for becoming my best friend and the love of my life. Out of the ashes have sprung love, joy and peace.

Sounds Like:

Someone just told me I sound like a cross between Willie Nelson and Jack Johnson. I think it was meant as a compliment. Someone else just told me I sound a bit like James Taylor. Now, that's a compliment. Besides, the one who told me is good looking!

Changes in songwriting subject matter

The last song I wrote, just after Christmas, was a new melody for the 23rd Psalm (King James Version). I find myself wanting to shift away from writing songs about relationships (divorce, being alone,...
