About Me

The Bros. Marler, were concieved in a freak accident involving a noble, and strapping young man trying to rescue his neighbors cat and a lovely farmers daughter who was simply trying to cool off under the shade of a willow tree. The young mans faulty step broke the branch of the willow tree in such a fashion that created a sharp edge of the fractured limb, so that when falling, dad, as the bros. later called him harpooned his left testicle, and landed on top of the unexpecting girl, now referred to as mom. The result was rather serious, in that the somewhat thin, straight branch stuck into the girl piercing the skin near the pelvis causing a deep wound that went all the way down to her ovaries. The immediate reaction was to pull the stick out, which caused the testicle to be lodged inside her. Frantically, they rushed to the hospital, where surgeons carefully removed the testicle, cleaned and successfully closed the wound. The strange and traumatic event instigated an instant friendship, and almost miraculously, soon after the incident while still a virgin, she discovered that she was pregnant. Nine months later she had twins, and by all accounts from those who were in the prenatal ward, they came out of the womb screaming in harmony. It was destined that music was their fate. The bros. played music all of their life and as young adults, when destiny called they moved from Opelika, Al. to Athens, Ga. Both brothers played rigourously together and with other bands while finishing college(philosophy/history). Throughout their lives the bros. were confronted with the metamorphosis of a memory. When once as children, their father got a phone number from a strange man with a large head, and huge dialated eyes who told them that the phone call would allow them to hear the return of radio waves long ago sent to bounce off of the now demoted planet Pluto. When they called, the sounds heard were more like white noise carried by a somewhat systematic, rythmic pulse. The twins were impressed, excited, and never really quite the same. As time went on, different catalyst within their lives and some mind altering experiences would transform the seemingly random sounds of their phone call to Pluto experience, into a manifestation of arranged songs, lended from their subconscious memory into a soon to be released( late April.) cd titled, naturally: Songs for Pluto. Stepping away from the jam scene, the cd is focuses more on clever song writing, strong harmonies, versatility and strong musicality. They will be playing often in athens, the southeast, and a short tour up the east coast this summer. keep your eyes peeled and your ears open.PART IIThe Bros. Marler moved to Athens,Ga in 1996 in search of an artistically driven southern community. Both are University of Georgia graduates (Philosophy&History). The twin siblings, born June 18th 1974 (Gemini) were raised in an enthusiastically musical family with their mother a piano teacher and father a writer. Although the brothers were raised on a steady diet of the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Motown their family's musical roots go all the way back to 1905 when their great grandfather Great Grandfather, Moses Lee Mann, opened the Sacred Harp Music School in Alabama. Due largely to this, the entire family for generations was expected to either play an instrument or sing like an angel. Another major influence that can be heard in the songwriting styles of the Bros. Marler is their father's fondness for oral narration. Being a storyteller and writer himself, he often carried his sons with him when performing his own stories (mostly southern folk) at festivals, schools, and libraries all over the south. Daniel and Drew also had the privilege of taking guitar as an elective at the high school that they attended under the care of jazz guitar genius Robert Winfield Orr (The Jazz Babies). Although Daniel soon joined the school's jazz band and later received a jazz performance scholarship at LBW, and Drew focused mostly on his solo acoustic style and songwriting, the two brothers shared a passion for all styles of music. Some of the influences heard on the CD are: Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Wilson Pickett, The Cure, Otis Redding, Jane's Addiction, Ween, Morphine, Tom Petty, The Pixies, Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, The Afghan Whigs, Elliot Smith, Johnny Cash, Beck, The Black Crows, Sonic Youth, and an enormous amount of Athens, Ga local music. After an east to west coast excursion and a considerable amount of college radio as well as indie label attention (One Deaf Ear, Maryland) The Bros. decided that the best thing to do would be to start from scratch and record new songs at a new studio, with a new engineer and try to release this one independently. After taking some time out to play with other bands and pursue other avenues of creativity the Bros. Marler embarked on their new CD. Featuring strong musicality, and a multitude of styles, the new CD explores the depth of the brothers song writing with intricate harmonies blended with a roots heritage that is made its own. The CD has been mastered by Jeff Capurso in October 2006 (Chase Park Transduction) and is pressed and ready for distribution. Everyone involved is excited and proud of their efforts.
