Wales is a Third World country - Paul McCartney

About Me

I'm Phil, aged 31, living in Mold with my partner Fiona and her two kids following an 11-month spell in Port Talbot. I enjoy travelling and am fascinated by languages and all things of a linguistic nature. When I need to escape from the stresses and strains of everyday life, I play my piano or keyboard and simply drift away.I also enjoy watching stand-up comedy and sitcoms and, when I'm being really self-indulgent, I'll watch a DVD - ideally something thought-provoking in the European arthouse tradition.

My Interests

Blogging, performing music, travelling, other languages and cultures. I'm not into Coldplay, Star Wars, ...the belief that non-drivers are second-class citizens, ... the assumption that everyone wants to move to London and the South East to live and work... the assumption that the guitar, rather than any other instrument, is the universally acceptable passport to musical credibility... the UK's belief that foreign language skills are a 'handy addition' to an employee's skills, not a valuable and increasingly rare asset. So there you go. That's me!

I'd like to meet:

Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Peter Kay, Audrey Tatou, Neil Finn...

Music:

Roddy Frame, Crowded House, Arcade Fire, Elton John, Eva Cassidy, River City People, Siobhan Maher-Kennedy, David Bowie, The Beatles, James, Bic Runga, Cerys Matthews, KT Tunstall, Stevie Wonder.

Movies:

Goodbye Lenin!, Amélie, The Edukators, La vita e bella, Philadelphia, Schindler's List, Wilbur Wants To Kill Himself, Together, My Life As A Dog, No Man's Land, Dirty Pretty Things, Educating Rita, Moulin Rouge.

Television:

Phoenix Nights, Parkinson, The Simpsons, Bullseye, Question Time, EastEnders, Dragon's Den.

Books:

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby, Eleanor Rigby by Douglas Coupland... almost anything by Ben Elton.

Heroes:

Paul McCartney

My Blog

Anthony H. Wilson (1950-2007)

As a long-standing James fan, I can't let the death of Tony Wilson - the self-appointed architect of the Manchester music scene in the '80s and early '90s - pass by without comment. Correct me if...

Paul Potts - a potential new Pavarotti?

Anyone who knows me at all will know that, as a BBC supporter, I usually avoid ITV1 most of the time. The channel's output rarely engages me. However, that changed earlier this week whe...

We reap what we sow

I've not blogged for a little while but that doesn't mean to say that I've not been irritated by recent media reports and social surveys bemoaning the supposed loss of certain values, the erosion of r...

Welcome home, James! (M.E.N. Arena - 28.04.07)

This was the gig that my friend Ian and I never thought we would see again... this Manchester band may have been more famous for their T-shirts and their 1991 anthem 'Sit Down'. But to those of us who...

Woman loses fight to have baby using frozen embryos

Normally I would steer clear of sensitive topics where the emotions of others are involved. However, on hearing the news of one woman's fight to use embyos fertilised by her former partner; ...
