“Wanted: Bass and drums for original music.” Looking to round out a band, Patrick Gilmour and Mike Swanson placed an advertisement in a local newspaper. John Procyk and Chris Biggs replied and City Vox was born - a committed, Edmonton based band that plays original pop-rock music.
City Vox has influences ranging from The Police, Mobile and The Fray to Radiohead and Coldplay. Just imagine Bono singing with Tom Yorke of Radiohead on rhythm guitar, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on lead, John "Bonzo" Bohnam of Led Zepplin on Drums and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Bass. Wouldn't that be cool? Absolutley!
After forming, City Vox rehearsed for several months until they were confident enough to enter the studio to record their first demo track titled, “I Am Waiting.” After positive feedback from those who heard the track, they returned to the studio to record three additional tracks: “Fire in Me”, “Ride”, and “Truth”. During this time, they had assembled enough original material for their first live performance, which took place at the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton.
Since then, City Vox has played shows at the following venues in Edmonton: The Sidetrack Cafe, The Urban Lounge, The One on Whyte, and The Blind Pig. They've opened up for Bobby Cameron and were scheduled to open up for Mariana's Trench at the Sidetrack Cafe but the show was cancelled because the Sidetrack Cafe closed down. All of their other shows have been headlining shows except when they played the Grand Prix of Edmonton Battle of the Bands (which was an invite only occasion sponsored by Budweiser, The Bear, and The One on Whyte).
City Vox Has been on regular rotation at Radio Enigma since December 2006 (www.radioenigma.com).
City Vox is currently assembling a website that will hopefully be available very soon (www.cityvox.ca) but until then you can access their music at their myspace page, www.myspace.com/cityvox or their sonicbids page, www.sonicbids.com/cityvox.
City Vox is comprised of Patrick Gilmour (Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar), Mike Swanson (Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals), John Procyk (Bass), and Chris Biggs (Percussion). Patrick’s natural vocal talent was accentuated by three years of study in the vocal performance and composition programs at Grant MacEwan College. Similarly, John and Chris were trained in Grant MacEwan’s music program in the bass and percussion programs, respectively. The odd man out in this respect, Mike’s training came in the form of private piano and guitar lessons from an early age. All members of City Vox are talented, inspired, and committed musicians who practice individually on a regular basis, and several times per week as a band.
As a band, City Vox is dedicated to expanding their audience, both locally in Edmonton, as well as provincially and beyond. In this regard, they will continue refining their live show and persist in honing their skills in the studio, with their ultimate goal being to more passionately convey their inspiration to audiences.
Look for City Vox to release their first full length album in 2008.
